Most likely you can remove the asbestos siding, double bag them and take them to your local landfill. I buy about 40 cardboard boxes to fit the siding. Place the bag in the box. Tape up with hd packaging tape. Much easier to handle.

Call your local landfill "manager" for input. You'll them have his name when you get to the gate.

My city code official would rather I use one or the other, but if I really want both on he insists on the tyvek over foam. I personally dont use housewrap with foam. The subject just came up because I had a homeowner who wanted it.

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare

In case you guys are wondering, when you wrap the house up all nice and pretty with your Tyvek, and then spend another day covering all your seams with tape.

When you go to hang your siding, your putting a million nail holes in the stuff which IS going to let the water right through.

FWIW we have gone over asbestos several times and the install technique all depends on the type of asbestos siding that is up there and how it was installed.

Nice point Patrick. But you gotta do what the inspector says, or the job doesn't continue. By the way, you better get better help if it's taking you a day to tape off.

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare

i feel the same way about taping tyvek
i try to never tape horizontal seams even tho i understand
moisture could be wind driven up through the seam
i feel better knowing if water does get in
it can get out if i don't tape the horizontal seams

all this being said, ive gone over cement shingles many times
most of the time without a problem
like was mentioned depends on how it was installed, alot of times its very solid,in Davin's case im doubtful its as soild as it needs to be

thanks jer
i have one of those kinds of names

Tomstruble and Patrick - I've seen several jobs applied over asb shingles.

Curious to know what kind of nails were used ? AL too soft ?

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare

usually 2'' roofers
the lap is the hardest part otherwise it nails pretty easily
as long as the cement panel is on solid sheathing there's not too much breakage were it becomes a problem

I've seen those shingles furred out that makes for a harder reside

In that case the old exposure was usually 10" so we try to use double 5" Siding so we can nail close to the furring

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare

i don't know how someone could side over asbestos if there is no plywood sheathing under it. the stuff will crack and the nails will come out. alot of older homes don't have plywood so you need to remove and nail directly into the studs. also need to put up some backing over the studs such as foam board.

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare

ill say it
you cant do a decent vinyl siding job just nailing to the studs
you have a window 20'' from a corner
how many nails you going to beable to get in the panels inbetween?1?maybe 2 if you angle the nail enough

In 2003, some Clarksville, TN framers down the street were burning their scrap wood for warmth.

I wonder when they figured out that the fire was too hot.

Too funny.

I just lost a 15sq job. My quote was to remove 2 layers of siding then install Monogram. The other bid was to install foam board then Mainstreet. The difference was almost $3,000.00

We have to tape all vertical seems to pass inspection. We have to call for inspection after tear off so they can inspect for rotted sheathing. Then another inspection once it's foamed or housewrapped. And then a final inspection. Dont you lucky S.O.B's have to go through that?
If we are going over the existing siding, we still have to have a pre-inspection to make sure it's in good shape.

We have to do the same here, it is because the hacks were covering up bad and rotted siding, now everyone has to go through the process because of the hacks.

WOW we would be lucky if the inspectors even looked at the house at any point during the job

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare

We wouldn't need a permit or any inspections here for a reside.

I've never seen the issue described in the OP either. Any house around here old enough to have asbestos siding will most likely have solid wood sheathing. The insulation board (we call it beaver board) sheathing is found under some vinyl, or more so aluminum siding.

What about strapping the wall first? I would think locating the studs with a sensor should be easy enough, install diagonal strapping 16"oc and go. Of course you'd have to fur out the windows and doors as well as compete with the guys that would slap it up with nothing.

Good Luck
Dave

Florida has high standards for licensing as well as building codes.
