Re: Vinyl Scratch Repair?

I reported a while back about doing a vinyl window repair (along with a website for info). I did the repair for the first time. I had no prior experience with it except for calling the gentleman on the website and speaking with him. He did not sell me his product bcuz it was enought to do 20 or so repairs and was fairly expensive. He told me how to do the homemade repair and this is how it came out. The situation was this: My crew broke the piece out of window, so option A was to buy new window that doesn't look the same (not available anymore, was about 15years old) and install or option B was I try this and pray lol.

A piece of vinyl from vinyl window I had laying around, Dremel tool for sculpting hole and new piece, some real fine sand paper, super glue (cause it sets fast, unless you like being out there all day and night), a hair dryer to help dry faster, and some white plastic primer and plastic paint used extremely sparingly. Oh ya, and tape and mask it off before painting. Total time involved about 6 hours and lots of patience. I could probably do it in half that time if I did it again, and probably faster if you did it over and over.

In other words, about the price of a new window.

VERY, very nice! Thanks for showing us that. It seems there is hope in Mudville.

Re: Vinyl Scratch Repair?

The key here, other than the time and money for a window, new exterior trim and possibly new interior trim, is that the customer keeps the same window and it matches. Even if we forked over the time and money to replace the window, they would have always looked at it (being that it would've looked different) and said "dumb contractor!"

Plus, it shows some of you guys that a situation like this can be repaired, especially if I did it on my first attempt.

Here is what it looked like after the piece was put in, after the first round of glue, no sanding.

Re: Vinyl Scratch Repair?

Oh, I fully agree that in that situation, repair was very much to be preferred over replacement. I've done similar a few times.

I was just kidding about the cost factor.

But if you refer back to the beginning of this thread, what prompted my initial post was a very "in your face" gouge on the surface of a porch post. You can get away with this type of repair in a situation like you had, but it would still stand out too much (for my taste, anyway) in the middle of a shiny flat area directly at eye level.

I'm doubting that a really good and lasting repair of the sort I'd like exists.
