Vinyl Over Stucco

Anyone care to post their method for siding over stucco? I have a 30sq house to do, stripping off aluminum siding that is over the stucco and then going back over with vinyl. The aluminum is nailed right into the stucco. Our general procedure would be to run vertical strapping with 3/4" foam in between. Anyone use any other methods? PS Im so sick of these odd ball houses I keep doing. When i used to be a sub it was ranch after ranch after ranch not a single problem to deal with. Now all I do are crooked, cut up houses, with the most poorly planned additions, and hedgerows all around the houses.

Re: Vinyl Over Stucco

If its stucco over wood frame you should be able to nail it on, you may have to hold your nail with pliers or even use concrete nails. If its over block or tile I would strip it with 1x4 with foam in between.

Ihave had the experience that it is best to keep your insulation without breaks to get the full value. In light of that I would use furring strips with concrete nails, after finding the studs of coarse, then nail the foam on and then the siding.

Stucco, yuck! I would also go with the 3/4" strapping with the foam in between. thats really the only way I have done it or seen it done. But there really aren't a lot of stucco around here.

I feel for ya Patrick!
That's one nasty application.

We did a block building, about the same size,2 years ago.The problem with nailing on the wood furring was that every time your hammer hit the wood ,it would loosen up the preceding fastener. You probably won't have that problem as long as you can hit sheathing with your nails.
What we ended up doing with the block walls was to pre drill the furring with room to countersink the head of a push pin fastener. Then pre-drill the block the depth we needed to install the pins. The furring went on 16'oc and we glued the insulation between them.
These projects become very time consuming, and that nailing process can be quite hard on your wrists.

Re: Vinyl Over Stucco

The one local building inspector put an addition on his house a few years ago. The house is brick and the additon is vinyl siding. He keeps bugging me to give him an estimate on covering the entire brick house with siding to match the addition I am doing my best to avoid him lol.

If you want to do it correctly, strip the stucco.

Re: Vinyl Over Stucco

We have put vinyl on 2 stucco houses. The first one we used masonry nails and it was a major PITA. You have to pound the nails so hard that if you miss and hit your thumb...well the second house we paid a sub to strip the stucco and life was much better.

Re: Vinyl Over Stucco

We use 1"x3" furring strips and 2 1/2" Tapcon screws for fasteners.
1x6 for the base to give us something solid to wrap with base flash and to attach starter.
3/8" fanfold over the furring then Tyvek.
PIA but the Tapcons allow us to better adjust the depth over uneven stucco shimming as necessary.keep some 3 1/2" tapcons handy
I don't envy you.

<edit>
If you get a job that's reasonably flat that's a bonus.
If you can find the studs under the stucco, just use a Ram Set(wear the ear protection)

Furr the house out with moisture resistant plywood or 1x6 cedar or tear the stucco off.

My method? Tear it off. 2 man hours per square plus disposal fees.

Re: Vinyl Over Stucco

i use furring strios,3/8 insulation then a wrap. only did 2 over stucco but came out nice. HO had the option of us taking off the stucco but both refused, said it was too much. go figure.

Re: Vinyl Over Stucco

Thanks Jake, We glued and nailed 1x3 every 16" then 1/2" t&g foam, and then the siding. You just have to THINK about where things will be attached, such as downspouts, electric drops, meters, lights etc, and make sure you have wood behind them. We put in a bunch of 3/4" plywood blocks to facilitate the installation of these things afterwards. It is really solid, if you were to go up close, and push on the siding, you would have no idea that it is furred out. We also used a heavy .o46 monogram panel. If i did it over though, I would have used a structure, or crane board panel rather than a regular panel, would have given us just a little more rigidity and float while installing. I really cant judge how much extra time we spent on this house as the weather was so bad, and we missed a ton of days. Every since that house though it seems like we are flying cause normal siding is like cake work after doing that one.

And thank you to all the NON siding contractors for informing me that we did this incorrectly.

Re: Vinyl Over Stucco

I will also say that we ran a piece of 2"x6" hemmed L bend all the way around the bottom of the wall, to A) keep insects out of the cavity, B) keep any loose pieces of stucco from falling out, and C) we were able to float the L bend perfectly flat, and then we riveted our starter to the L bend, so that we could get it balls on straight with no waves.
