Vinyl Over Aluminum?

Toady i received a phone call from an older gentleman that asked me over the phone befire i would come out to givean estimate if i installed vinyl siding over aluminum siding, i assured him that i would not, and proceeded to tell him i couldnt see how it was even possible to do properly, i cant even imagine that passing code, anyhow he woas insistent that a contractor just gave him an estimate and told him he was going over the aluminum siding, and that this "contratcor" had done a neighbors house over the aluminum siding, this is the 2nd time i heard this about this "contractor" so i knew the guy wanst crazy, but i have to ask am i crazy? Am i missing something? Am i wrong? I dont think so, i have been doing this for over 20yrs. I have never ever seen a reputable contractor go over aluminum and i still dont even see how its possible to nail and secure and seal or meet building code.

Re: Vinyl Over Aluminum?

Definitely not somethin' I'd want to get involved in, - - sure, it could be done, - - but it's ignorant, - - and embarrassing enough to make you take your signs off your own truck while you were doing it.

Would also cause additional problems such as the need for additional packing out, - - 'hollow' distant nailing, - - differing dimensional stability, - - and a total lack of rigidity.

Not to mention, the expansion of the vinyl during the hot months is enough on it's own, - - without an aluminum 'heat-sheet' backer behind it.

I would consider giving him a price for tear off and installation of the new siding anyways.

More than likely the other guys price will be up there anyways, due to furring strips and the price of rigid insulation plus labor for installation of these materials.

If he's even installing them.

Vinyl over aluminum? Your crazy! Impossible to do properly. Tear if off. ON a 20 square house, what's the homie going to save? $700 and he's going to get a schlock job that just won't last.

I never even knew people were doing this until recently i was approached by a rehabber who does forclosures and asked me to do the same. i told him impossible and he said he has a guy who has done it for him on all his properties.

Well, i feel better i thought i was losing my mind or something. Its rediculaous what some guys will do, but the real kick was he has this guy convinced it is the right thing to do. i am going to see this customer monday to give him an estimate, but it really crazy to see what peopel do to cut a few hundred dollars. Actually its absurd.

Re: Vinyl Over Aluminum?

As quick as it is to take the aluminum off far outweighs all the BS involved in getting the new vinyl to lay flat. But most of all, how do they J the windows and doors?

Most of the aluminum we've removed have uncovered a few bucks in extras fixing all the rot that was covered up with the aluminum in the first place. Plus we take the the aluminum to the scrap yard. Pays for the Christmas party. (Pardon me. The "Holiday" party).

Re: Vinyl Over Aluminum?

the owner of this house wanted me to do the same. He buy forclosers and
flips them. I explained to him saving $800 Dollars was not worth it considering
I or most company's will void warranty. another thing I showed him some pic
from the net that showed impromperly spaced siding that buckled and waved
looked horrible that was enough to talk him out of it .

$6700 spent siding house
$800 removal aluminum siding

.
.
.
selling aluminum to a metal yard receiving $250 priceless!!
