Vinly Siding On Cinder Block?

I'm giving an estimate on a raised ranch house on a cinder block foundation. The customer wants to run the siding down 3ft onto the cinder block. Now the outside plywood is even with the block. If I fir out the block with 3/4 boards I will have to do the whole house to keep everything even. Can I get away with using Tapcons or something to hang the first 3ft?

Wouldn't you be foaming the house anyways? We always foam so it wouldn't be a big deal to bump out 3/4

Why not? Sounds like a PITA, but seems like the siding would "slide" just the same as it slides on the roofer's you'd otherwise use.

Personally, - - I think I would drill holes and insert plastic shields to attach the siding to the block, - - for three reasons.

1. the plastic shields are much less finicky to use then tapcons.

2. the screw-shanks will be a smaller diameter (for movement).

3. the screw-heads will have a much less pronounced profile (no telegraphing).

Tom... do you suppose if a guy used plastic anchors sized for #6 or #8 screws, he could use roofers right in the plastic anchors?

Tapcons work fine,I have done it many times, you could also fasten a material the same thickness as the foam you are using (if any?) to keep the wall flush and then screw the siding to that as mentioned in the post above!

Actually, - - that's what I was thinking at first, - - I just didn't post it 'cuz I never actually tried it.

Also, - - nails would be more likely to (eventually) pull out of the plastic then screws.

Why not rip a 1/2" sheet of PT plywood into strips shoot and glue them in and use 1" roofers. A little tough to handle the nails but the plywood would be flush with the foam and the nails are floated out anyway. The tapcons may be the fastest way if its block and not poured wall.

Re: Vinly Siding On Cinder Block?

I've done several block buildings in siding. (maybe 20 or 30) Without any doubt the best way is to furr out the walls on 16 inch centers with 3/4 boards, insulate between them with rigid foam then nail the siding to the boards.
I'm not sure how much you have to cover but figure around 9 tapcons per full piece and start adding up. They ain't cheap.
Plus, unless you use washers the siding will eventually pop off the screws unless they have big heads and if you get a screw with a big head the body restricts the siding movement and you end up with oilcanning.
Vinyl applied directly to concrete or blocks is just wrong and shouldn't be done IMO.

A pin has as much or more grip as nails have. Save the money use concrete fastining devices that you like and understand .

I agree. We use 1x6 cedar or occasionally rip presure treated ply wood because you should not use untreated lumber against cement blocks to fur out the wall.

Re: Vinly Siding On Cinder Block?

or talk them into spray on stucco using a hopper box to cover the block with a texture with a nice knockdown finish or a directonal pull to give it a grain look

Strips of 3/4" with foam between sounds the best to me, although i've never tried it. Also, i think it would be easier to level the starter strip then trying to use tapcons, no?

yes its a good way to handle it, when the build out isnt an issue i like to sheath over the foam and furring this way where ever you want to put a nail theres something there

I guess that's good if the build out isn't a problem and it's not too big of a job. That could get pretty expensive. But your right about being able to nail anywhere....very nice.

tapcon or ramset 3/4 inch fur strips on. roofing gun to install the siding then run a band board to make up the transition
