Unusual vinyl siding request----opinions

we are installing cedar boards by certainteed on a home; the siding with the insulation attatched like the crane. anyway, its 3/4 inch insulation and the homeowner still wants us to put up insulation board. no matter how thin the extra insulation board is,it will cause much more labor because we would have to build out corners and everything else. i already told the guy that he has toi draw a line in the sand somewhere because you only need so much insulation.

doesn't sound like a big deal to me. if your using vinyl corners they will just go over the foam and use longer nails. If you are making your own corners out of aluminum you just gotta use some 2x3 or 4 not really a big deal.

Imo

I would offer to check and fill the walls with blow-in insulation.(thick exteriors make me nervous)
Is this for a green issue 'cause if the guy is just going for energy cost.
I'm guessing it would take 30+ yrs.to recover the L&M cost of the extra insulation. Just my thoughts

We use foam underlayment with all vinyl and polymer sidings including Crane Board, Cedar Boards and Structure to flatten the wall for the new siding. We dont use foam underlayment on new construction.

Im not sold on foam backed siding. In the 80`s manufacturers started gluing foam to aluminum siding and most of it de-laminated. With some darker colored vinyl like granite gray cedar max we have seen this problem. With the 3 different densities of the vinyl, glue and foam, expanding and contracting at different temperatures and ratios, the panel begins to
de-laminate giving it an appearance of oil canning. Alcoa Structure with the Dow Styrofoam was probably the best of this type of siding but is now made the same as all the others.

Your so right about Lake Forest. We tried to steer people away from Lake Forest back in day because the Kynar had problems and the 7 hunter units of fade warranty meant that the panel had to fade to base layer. I have seen many Lake Forest jobs that are now just base layer or a totally different color on each wall in 12 years instead of lifetime.

since the 80's technology has really made a difference in the lamination process and in the fadeing or lack of technology!

Go knock on the door and tell the people you will reside their house for FREE. Call your alcoa rep, and they will send you the dumpster, siding, and pay you the going rate, or if you bitch to them they will pay you more. They dont pay for new window wraps or facias, so you may get additional work from the HO by offering to side their house for free.

Alcoa only pays $125.00 a sq to remove and replace plus a disposal fee in my area. Its hardly worth our time to pursue. We only do warranty work for our customers as a service as we really don't make any money at $125.00.

If you complain enough, they will pay your normal labor rate.

Gentek has droped the labor to $85.00 per sq. for remove and replace. You can get $125.00 by complaining. If you order an extra box thats another $250.00 labor plus a box of siding that you may not want.

Gentek denied one of my customers waranty, which most manufactures do, so the home owner called and talk to Glen Isom who OKed 8 sq. of siding when the home owner agreed to install it himself. This put us in a position of "look I got the siding for free and I need you to install it for free". This home is in a very nice area and to avoid problems we scheduled it in.

Now all the Alcoa, Mastic, Napco and Veriform waranties will be subject to Gentek replacement policies.
