Units Vertical

Hi, I don't understand how to figure out units vertical when finding out what he slope is on a roof. Also I don't understand the formula used to calculate dead loads, live loads, snow loads, wind loads, when installing skylights in homes.

They state any glass sloped more than 15 degrees from vertical in skylights shall be designed to resist combination wind loads for componants and cladding, the snow loads, and the glass dead loads.

Then they give a formula

Does anyone know how to explain this in laymens terms so someone like me can understand?

Much appreciate any help
