Kinda scary what committees come up with.
Yes, because they are so narrow minded. You mention a good idea and BAM "you have to do this on every house from now on"

Weather, direction, materials, EVERYthing plays a factor..........Although we had one inspector say, "well you don't have to go overboard...you can apply some common sense"

Common sense!!!! That left the building when we decided to let people make building codes that sit at a desk all day. Some of this stuff, I tell ya.....

Re: TYVEK Vs Felt Paper--which Is Better???

wont the felt paper get too hot and warp vinyl siding. vinyl is what most people around here use.

also we are told not to tape/flash the bottom of the window so any moisture can get out from behind the tyvek.

we mostly use typar on our jobs, but alot of builders use tyvek. i havent seen any one use felt paper on walls in a long time

I haven't used anything but #30 felt paper in the last 13 years at least. I haven't seen the siding distort on any of them.

Re: TYVEK Vs Felt Paper--which Is Better???

As felt gets wet its permeability gets better. I'm still not sure what I prefer using. I think if your are going to wrap a house and have it sit for awhile before sididng, then your best bet is house wrap. It just holds up better. But, if you are going gang busters than I'd use 30# felt. All air sealing should be done at the sheathing anyway, not house wrap. I try to install rain screen on any siding I do, and I'm slow so I usually end up using house wrap. I don't do vinyl or aluminum siding.

Does felt not tear extremely easy, making it an inferior product by having penetrations.

Re: TYVEK Vs Felt Paper--which Is Better???

Felt can take and release moisture- meaning if (when) moisture gets behind it, that moisture can escape.
Felt is organic- it will deteriorate, but mostly if it gets a cycle of wetting and drying. That's a good way to tell where leaks are.

60 minute paper is not the same thing as felt (asphalt impregnated felt).
60 minute paper is asphalt impregnated paper, and has a tested rating for water hold-out.

Tyvek and the like have gotten much better over the years. They are primarily better as air barriers.
Most of the building papers are still more subject to surfectants than felt. If water gets behind them, they don't do as well at allowing it to escape before the sheathing is damaged.

Adding an air space, either a drainage plane or a (much more difficult) rain screen increases performance of any of the materials. I believe the space reduces vapor drive through the WRB and reduces water pressure when water gets through the siding.

All require flashing. All flashing has to be done in a weatherboard manner.

Re: TYVEK Vs Felt Paper--which Is Better???

don't laugh,double wrb is something ive thought about,and that's a great question

having an extra layer, like they do with masonry work, would be a better choice with reservoir cladding if your not going to use a rainscreen, not saying it would replace it,but sometimes a rainscreen ain't in the cards and this i think is a better alternative to using just 1 layer

maybe with felts variable permeability, its not much of an issue

i think i would go with the synthetic as the outer wrb because of its greater uv and tear resistance

but the thing with felt is when its exposed to moisture it ''wrinkles''and these wrinkles are what gives the air space that you like to see behind any siding so maybe that should be first....what ya think?

For that reason and the fact felt is so stiff I would do the opposite.
