Re: Tyvek And Tyvek Taping Around Windows (new Construction)

just had a tyvek class last year

u cut the tyvek along window opening

then tyvek tape the tyvek around right and left sides(tape tyvek....around the sheeting to the framing( so if you foam your windows, the foam insulates to the window and not get behind the tyvek)

then use the sill tape on bottom of opening, pushing tape into the corners

then cut like a 2" diagonal cut on top inside corners of tyvek to make a flap like this \________/

install window

flash tape right/left side over flange to tyvek

flash tape top flange(folding up tyvek so u can flash tape to sheeting)

last fold down tyvek and tyvek tape tyvek to flashing tape and tape over the diagonal slits so that your cuts are covered

no flashing or tyvek tape on the bottom, if water ever gets behind your flashing, water has a chance to get out

hope that made sense, hard to explain with pics......sry

Re: Tyvek And Tyvek Taping Around Windows (new Construction)

Yeah what kubie said

I also had a class that covered proper wrApping. And with the windows he explained to cut the opening like an hour glass a v at the top and an upsidedown v at the bottom being connected by a straight line cut. Then the tape on the sides first and finally across the top. Of course after the window is installed too.

Just think like water.

Re: Tyvek And Tyvek Taping Around Windows (new Construction)

i dont use tyvek tape to seal windows. ill slash the tyvek as most do folding it in and stapling it down to the sil then the sides.

from there i use 6" vycor and do a sil pan, the peice is cut about 6" longer than the r.o. i set it to the sil about 3" in from the edge and then up the side, from there i cut a slash 1" up from the sil then fold it out and around to the outside which creates a trough effect. then the window gets set into a bead of caulking at the sides and top then i tape the sides and top nailing flange with 4" vycor. now if vinyl is going on i cut the tyvek along hte top of the nailing flange so the vycor can tuck up under neath, if its getting wood siding i simply vycor over the rain screen furring, after teh wood trim goes on the metal cap flashing gets installed which get s tucked up under the tyvek

Re: Tyvek And Tyvek Taping Around Windows (new Construction)

tyvek also has their own flashing tape Kirk,it may be what was meant

''think like a drop of water'' i've heard this a long time ago,but i think it's the wrong way to think

differences in air and wind pressure, capillary action and water adhesion can make water do things it never thought it could

maybe we should strive to be just a little smarter than a drop of water

Thanks to all for the help. I'm gonna cut top to be a flap then. One thought I got though. If you have the housewrap folded in covering the entire sill. (Not 45 in from corner). Does a guy just need a peice of

[QUOTE="kubie"]just had a tyvek class last year

Your video buddy puts kubie explaination in pitures. One thing though I've never seen those sill pans around here like in video. What those cost ea.? My thinking is if tyvek wouldn't be damage and not wear out on the rough opening sill. IMO which I don't think would. Would you just need the sill tape to protect the bottom corners. You get a 10' window opening that's like $20 of sill tape.

Re: Tyvek And Tyvek Taping Around Windows (new Construction)

Here is what tyvek wants to see. They also cover labor if you use button caps to apply the wrap. We use the tyvek sealent on top and side flanges set the window then use 4" Dupont flashing on sides and across the head. Tyvek is saying there 4" flashing is plenty if you follow the rest of there guidlines

tyvek is water resistant not waterproof,on horizontal areas it's even probably less so,sill flashing is the most important sidewall flashing component and it's not wise to skimp here

Re: Tyvek And Tyvek Taping Around Windows (new Construction)

tyvek won't void your warranty as long as it's compatible [they will find a way to do that long before they get to the flashing tape]

you don't need to use flex wrap, you can use the straight wrap using butterflies or i think vycor may have preformed corners

point is your going to spend depending on the unit at least 1000 bucks on that hole in the wall,50 dollars in material to protect it isn't a lot
