Soffits And Facia

Hi guys

I rarely do any facia and soffits but i have to replace some but wanted to know any pros and cons of using the pvc coated aluminum coil...anything to watch out for...why is it better ? is it?

Am painting aluminum siding and relacing the soffits too, any problems with using vinyl for soffits when everythign else is aluminum? will it be noticable?

Re: Soffits And Facia

For the first question:

I have'nt seen any PVC coil that's been on long enough to see if the finish will hold upto the test of time....you know how some of the old coil stock losses the finish, but they're been installed for 20+ years. PVC coated just is'nt "old enough" yet. But it is what I used on my own house just because it seems to stay cleaner looking longer than the Rollex/Gentec standard aluminum coil and the wood grain is a nice touch too.

things to watch out for-it mars/scars very easily....even just using an old break will be enough to put a black/grey smundge on the finish that will not come off. When fitting tight pieces 9like they should be if you have to jocky it around a bit the finish will become marred/scratched.

It cuts very funny, old aluminum you score it and bend it a time or two and it's broken free, all the PVC coated I've used seems to take twice as many bending back and forths then I still have to "rip or tear" it off the part clamped in the break.

For question 2:
If it's a single story the material texture will be easily noticed between the vinyl and aluminum. To the common eye (just not the person that has lived with aluminum and you've switched it to vinyl) when the project is finished 90% of folks never pay attention and dont care so long as it's maintainence free. I've personally hated mix and matching materials though since it kinda screws up the flow of asthetics. but as long as it looks nice, it'll work just fine-it's not like the house is going to self destruct when you install the last peice of fascia

Re: Soffits And Facia

Check this out. When my soffitts were rebuilt last summer with the aluminum that has little vent holes in it. Here is exactly how he cut it. Took the box not opened. Stood it up slammed it down so all pieces would slide to one end. Then Took tape messure drew a square lines on the box took out saw and cut them in the box meaning box and all. Opened the box up and they were all cut up in stackes. It was the coolest thing i ever seen. Now fascia. If gutters are going behind it he used one kind if no gutters he used another that has two lines running down it. He said the other looks wavey thats why only used behind guttars.

I know home depot is huge on the pvc coated coil. I have seen the coating actually seperate from the metal. Obviously a manufacturer problem however your the one who gets the call back. We use baked on enamel or baked on acrylic, same thing really.

Vinyl soffits will be noticeable if everything else is aluminum, other than you said you are painting the existing siding. The noticeability part is the slight sheen to the vinyl, if you use a paint with a slight sheen you may be ok.

747 is right about the grooves in the gable end fascia. The more bend the less wrinkles. Another trick is to simply bend a kick out at the top of the gable fascia, which will eliminate some wrinkles, but not all. In regards to cutting in the box, that scares me. All professionals I have seen use a soffit cutting table, most are home made, but all get the job done with a nice straight square cut.

NO a regular hand held electric saw. Opened up the box and all cut and ready to install a perfect fit for the soffits on front of house and back now the gable soffits well that was a different story everyone was a special cut do to the gable soffits widening as the go up.

Pvc coil is the best..It's thicker than smooth coil and I think it looks better than pre bent.. I am a sider and I used pvc coil on my house.. Another good option is to find prebent fascia without the lines in it.. dont like those lines

Yeah I hate those lines also, that's why we don't do the prebent. If you know of a good metal shop, not usually a typical siding supply house, they will custom bend anything you want. Most of my siding crews usually have one ground man specifically bending up metal and two-three guys hanging the metal. When you do it every day, I don't see the benefit to pre-bent.

Re: Soffits And Facia

There ribs so the fasia does not bukkle because of the thin guage of aluminum I only bend fasia over 6 inches. You guys probably use tapco
