Soffit Fascia Help

I was wondering if someone could help me out here.

Im building a 16 X 24 garage and the inspector wants me too use 2x8 Rafters 16" OC.

I Would have to use a 2x8 for the Subfascia, and a 1x10 for the fascia board.

Im afraid this wont look good, as it will have a wide trim piece going around the building.

Can I cut and taper the rafter tails after the birdsmouth to a narrower width?
I would like to taper it to a 2x4 for the subfascia, and finish it off with a 1x6 for the fascia. Then install my lookout to box the soffit in

Can I do this? Or is this another way to go with the 2x8 rafters and eliminate a 10" trim piece around the eves overhang?

Thanks in advance....

You can do that or what we used to do is just bob off the bottom point of the rafter to meet the 5 & 1/2 inches for your 1 by 6

I would keep the fascia at a 2 by 6 and not 2 by 4 though

Thanks for the quick reply...

Ok , yeah thats kinda what I meant, was to just take the bottom point off.

So are u saying to just use a 2x6 over the fascia?

I always though u had to use a subfascia 2By material, and then cap that with a 1By, one size larger?

You can but if you are going to use aluminum soffit and fascia the board behind it doesn't have to be pretty. The 2 by also holds the joist in more of a straight line

Re: Soffit Fascia Help

Thanks for your help guys. I will do a 2x6 subfascia with a 1x8 fascia
I just wanted to make sure this was something others do, and I dont want to go out of code on the rafters.

Might be common knowledge for a Pro carpenter, but as u can see, im not.

I think it would look great and as far as the framing go's I would use 2x6 all the way. A storage shed with thos specs is darn good.
