So-called "professional" siders.

This is what burns my britches about some siding contractors. Don't they realize that the siding is not what keeps the water out?HO asked me to troubleshoot a couple "roof leaks".Guess they ran out of paper at the roofline.

In the first photo, the paper was lapped over the J, debris built up and forced the water over the J and behind the step flashing, which should have been bigger IMO.
The second photo shows a chimney cap that should have been at least flashed better before the cedar trim was wrapped around it.
The third photo shows a view between the cap and the cedar trim, looking down at the end of the cornerpost.

awesome isn't it? When you can come back and repair a job and make it right.. ALWAYS makes me feel good inside. That knowledge is power, that the whole "I told you so" doesn't even need to be said, cause they wasted their money, and had to call you back and fix it anyway. WE <3 HACKS!

Unfortunately, this HO unknowingly bought the house with these leaks. He had a few roofers come out to repair the leaks to no avail. I happened to be there doing another job and he asked me my opinion. Told him they were siding leaks, educated him a little and did the job, complete with a new aluminum chimney cap that covers the siding by 1 1/2 inches.

It really is too bad but those clowns are in every State and Province.....

I ended up haveing to redo a house that was only 3 months old...
got a call to come shingle 4 gables that the last company did not finish... started seeing some bad signs... needless to say everything came back off the house and got redone. and by some mysterious way the other company had dissapeared.

It's crap like this bad construction methods that makes customers out there all wary and they judge us all as hacks and rip-off artists.

I spend alot of time and energy to try and educate people on how what I do is different, for a reason, than some of the others in our area. Then I hope their positive word of mouth spreads to their friends.

I really hate being painted by the hack brush of the true hacks out their, in the eyes of future potential customers.

I wish there was a way to professionally separate ourselves from the bottom feeding hacks. There are customers that will pay for our our skills, if they only know that we will save them in the long run.

Done Once. Done Right.

I wish you could judge a contractors quality by there price but you can't. That would be to easy.

There's a good chance this guy charged a pretty penny and still did poor work.

Customer's buy you and look at the install part as a commodity. Which is false.

I think showing them these pictures is a good idea. But say if you don't pay me more than the other guy this is what you will get isn't necessarily true.

i'm not saying if they don't pay me top dollar this is what happens.i am going to show them the pics and warn them that unfortunately there are "handymen" that do siding much cheaper than i charge but this is the kind of work they do. this is a warning about the weekend vinyl sider or the kitchen remodeler that tells his cutomer he can throw siding up.

that is straight scab work.. i honestly don't know how you could go home and sleep at night. there is a difference in making saving time and cutting corners.. just like making money and scamming. I'm far from a professional but that siding work makes me look really damn good

This was a mid price range development of about 75 homes. I wonder how many other houses here have similar problems. Actually, I wonder what I would find if I gutted the rest of the siding on this house.

the thing with the siding buisness is hacks are taught by other hacks, hell sometimes its passed down from father to son, speed and a wipe down for finger prints are sometimes more highly prized than durability

I framed exclusively fo a builder in Ocean City that paid me to wrap every building I framed for him because he had never found a sider that spent the necessary time to get it right. They were really good siders, but sucked at the prep work.

its because for a long time the only thing that mattered was speed and getting the check from the homeowner. Most of the siding contractors ive worked for over the years didnt want me to take the time to do things right the first time, they just wanted to get paid now and worry about fixin the screwups later. Its really the reason im in my own buisness today, guy has to be proud of the work he does imo, even if its being proud of work nobody will ever see
