Silicone Between Sheets Of Glass???

I'm hoping you guys that work with glass can help me. I do mostly commercial work and have encountered many times where we have to install glass that is supported on the bottom and top but sits 1/4" from the next piece of glass. For a clean look the designers just want a bead of silicone in the 1/4" gap between the panes. What is the neatest (most clean) way to fill the gap with silcone. So far have made a pretty good mess of alot of them. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Silicone Between Sheets Of Glass???

Tha'ts typically how I do my silicone is perfection type areas, tape the close ares you do not want the silicone on, then a wet/damp putty kinfe to strike it smooth.

Only problem I see-especially during summer months when the silicone is very warm due to ambient temps and filling a void that wide and however deep is that it will want to sage. Hopefully it's a quick setting type silicone so you can fill inital void 2/3 of the way and let it do what it does-sag. then cover it with a thin "skim coat" that will be less prone to sag since it's a very thin layer. and always keep your smoothing tool damp so it does not pull up edges.

To prevent the sagging problem, - - stick the tube of silicone in the refrigerator for 30-40 minutes before use.

Ah, she'll get over it, - - just yesterday she asked "hey, where's my laundry table"??, - - not my fault the thing was posing as a 'wallpaper' table. I'll bring it back tomorrow.

Talkin' about the refrigerator, - - what really gets her is when we're workin' at my house and we skip out for lunch, - - then she opens the fridge to get somethin' to eat, - - and it's full of PAINT BRUSHES!!

Re: Silicone Between Sheets Of Glass???

Thanx for the advice guys. The tape was my suggestion to to the guy I work with, he disagreed (and he's got ten years on me and doesn't listen, so of course he's always right - "NOT"). The tape thing and wet knife worked great on the last couple of days doing this office reno. After I told him you guys suggested this method, he agreed and it turned out great: Thanx again guys!!!
