Siding On Piece Work
I am looking at putting my seamless steel siding crew on piece work pay scale, but I have never done it before. Does any body have any suggestions on how this pay works and a plan for setting it up.

Re: Siding On Piece Work
It harder to pay guys on a seamless siding machine piece work because you need to make the siding before you hang it. We did this once with the crew boss (me) on piece work and the crew hourly. My problem was I had to reley on guys with less experience. Even though I made $500.00+ a day (in 1993 ) it wasnt worth all the hassel. It was like baby sitting a bunch of newbies. I went back to vinyl where two guys can make easier money with less problems.

Re: Siding On Piece Work
Are you running ABC franchise or did you buy a machine out of Canada. If your a franchise ask them. When you pay a man piece work with boxed siding he is working for himself and you take away his incentive ( money) when you put him on a seamless crew. Especially if he is good. There always seems to be disagreement on how much material is used when the siding is not in a box.
We pay subs 20% more than employees. |

Re: Siding On Piece Work
If you have a good lead man I would pay them by the hour with bonus incentives for your lead man. Your lead man $18.00 to $20.00 per hr. and helpers $10.00 to $12.00. If you have a helper that can run the job if your lead man is out you may want to pay him $14.00 to $16.00 per hr.

Re: Siding On Piece Work
You should pay them around a 110 a square and 2 a foot for softit and fascia. Rather thats what the going rate around here is, but it not seamless. I hope it helps.

Oh they are employees. I think Jake has the figures right. Are you supplying tools and truck. What about wkrs comp? My labor numbers are for guys that do it all tools, truck, and comp.

Re: Siding On Piece Work
I have done a few different things with pay and every one has its ups and downs. Now the easiest way to do piece work is to figure a percentage of contract price and pay them that. If you budget say 25% of your total contract for labor, give that to the crew and this will work nice until you get one that a salesperson screws up then fists might be flying. A good piecework rate for seamless is $110 a square, 2.50 a ft s/f, $40 a wrap. I have heard of people figuring squares by weighing the coils in and out, but that just gives incentive to waste coil. I really think that a good seamless contractor with their ducks in a row should be able to find a real good 3 man crew and pay them $20-25/hr for the top guy, 16-20/hr for the middle guy and have a good trainee for the third on the crew that gets 12-16/hr. The way I have done it is to pick my three wages leave it at that. When a guy is hired he starts as the trainee at $14 an hour and does not get a raise until he is moved up to #2. Once you make crew cheif, you get the top wage, a company truck, and an extra 2 weeks of vacation.
