Re: Siding Over Asbestos

I do it all the time, no problem. You don't have to fir it out, you can nail through it but may bend the occasional nail when hitting the spots where the asbestos is lapped (double). It does break but most of it stays on the wall, may be a few small pieces on the ground to clean up at the end of the job. I am talking vinyl or steel siding with a backer behind it, not sure what kind you are referring to.

Nail through it no problem. Install a insulation board first to even out the surface. Some tiles may break when nailing so wear proper protection.

Re: Siding Over Asbestos

generally around here we remove it. it makes a much nicer look to the end job.i have sided over and they are right use a backer board. however i don't know why it's such a problem to remove as long as its non-frayable ( most is ) check with your local land fill just throw it in the pick up tarp it and take it to the landfill. here in pa its around $56.00 a ton to dump not any more expensive than regular garb. there is a little paperwork to fill out at the landfill but they will give you lots of forms to keep for future jobs. not so bad and besides sounds like these customers are trying to get it done cheap as possible. not the best possible so be careful. so yes you can do it and get away with it but would reccommend tearing old off and also check with your manufacturer about warrenty issues when leaving old siding on! hopes this help later

Re: Siding Over Asbestos

Thanks guys
This is actually a question for my house. I have no idea whats under the asbestos, but something is. The siding is pretty built up, you can see on the window casing. I'm planing on doing it in vinyl,I may strip it.
I know it will look much better in the end. I'll try to post some before and after pics when i get done.

Re: Siding Over Asbestos

All my years of siding I always went over it cause it was fairly flat and was told it was safe for this process. I totally believe any job stripped is neater period, if it were up to me they should make it code like roof layers that it be removed if more than 2 layers ---you can put vinyl on anything thats why it everyone does it. I dont know exactly the procedure for removale but I know it is expensive. I thought you need wear suits, spray it down and specially bag it then ship to and approved landfill. The permit is special and the D.E.P. IS also paid for filing. I dont know for sure about this. It seemed like too much hassle to get involved with.
