Siding Gap

Horizontal coved shiplap wood siding. Do you allow courses to lightly rest on each other or do you gap the overlap?

Thanks

Send a message via ICQ to A W Smith
you mean by stacking on the ship lap cut behind? if you install the siding with the exposure at 6 or 8 inch (depending on the overall width) is there a gap?

I have installed it to a snapped line,
just lie lap siding, to allow a gap
for expansion when it isn't back primed.
If I get to back prime it I don't worry
so much.
Is that what you mean?
If you are in the desert maybe it
doesn't matter like it does here
where we have humidity.
If you're up in the Humbolt....
How wide is it?

The siding is a 8" preprimed New Zealand pine. I decided to raise the boards a 1/16" to be on the safe side.

My next stupid question is how many nails. The cove at the top extends down 2". We have one nail 1 1/2" up from the bottom. If we put another nail at the top it leaves about 3" between nails.

I go @ 1" up from the bottom
and @ ½" below the rabbet.
