The issue is there is such a wide range of pricing especially in the siding field. If you take a customer with an average 20 square job, they are going to get prices that range from $5,000 to possibly $30,000 All of the contractors bidding obviously think they are offering a fair price. So what truly is fair? Who knows, as long as we make enough to cover costs, and turn a profit that makes it worth all of the liability of being in business, than that's fair to us.
There is also going to be the carpenter bidding on the job that "can bang up siding" and then there are going to be professional companies, that can "Install" a siding system that will look as much like wood as possible, and outlast the competition. There is a huge price difference between the jamb jumpers, and the true craftsmen.

Hey neolitic,
I guess you never asked another contractor about pricing before.I thought this site was here to talk about the construction field and help each other out, but i guess i was wrong.

You are wrong if you think contractors don't help each other out on this site.
You are also wrong if you think there really is a "going rate".
Try introducing yourself first. There is an introduction section for just that and should have been your first place to post. Tell a little about yourself and your business or job.
Then use the search feature and you will learn quickly that how much questions are generally frowned upon. You can also find numerous threads that will help you figure out how much you need to charge for your business model and goals.
Do some homework and come back with better questions and you will get some help.
Good Luck
Dave

Sorry, I guess you could learn
to figure my costs, or Patrick's,
but I'm not sure how much that would
help you?

[quote=Patrick;652786]There is also going to be the carpenter bidding on the job that "can bang up siding"quote]
Hey I resemble that remark Sometime so true though. I am a carpenter that installs siding. You without a doubt would just about double what I make on a 25 square house, bid at the same price. That doesn't mean that I just bang up siding. When shopping for customers I am shopping for all their work. Siding roof, flooring, decks, baths and kitchens. Out here in the rural areas there are very few people that just install siding (there are a couple though).
On pricing...I do my material takeoff and figure how long I am going to be there. Add 50% for the additional time it will really take me and walla I have a price. The material takeoffs are the easy part.

Yea, the best part is we close the sale same day, before you carpenters even get your take off done

No way, I just think those that specialize do a better job. I wouldnt go frame a house, not because I cant, but because i dont do it day after day after day, so i do not know the ins and outs, and it would take me three times as long and be no where near as neat.
I know how to solder pipes too, but it doesn't make me a plumber

Exterior wall finishes are part of a carpenters training. Yes the pro sider can do the job faster, but that doesn't mean a carpenter can't do the job. I happen to have a C of Q in carpentry and a diploma from a Trade College in Residential Sidings, which covered steel, aluminum, and vinyl sidings, soffits, facias, troughs, take offs, proper levelling, start heights, etc. etc. Oh, and I'm fast at it too!
