Rotten Hardi Plank Siding I Replaced

Hey guys, these are some pics of some hardie siding I did about 3 years ago that I took today before I replaced the siding. The HO called and said "some of the siding was rotten" I was thinking in my head, what ya right. I went today to look at it and ended up replacing 5 peices total that were damaged. It looks like the furnace exhaust is what caused the damage, you can see in the pic the exhaust blows in its direction. Its a 90+ efficency furnace, I figured that high of an efficency furnace burned almost everything. And the air isn't hot or anything, it is very moist though. After I fixed the peices I reaimed the exhaust pipe away from the siding. I don't think this would have happened to vinyl

I have heard of similar occurrences happening. I assume the moisture coming out of your exhaust there is freezing up in the winter on the ends there, but not right away, just until night time. Freezing obviously will blow that apart just like you see there.

A story I've heard is the bottom course or two where the water drips from the roof edge and splashed up against the siding and freezes when it gets dark out.

Right back to wood we all go!

That's because Hardie is a layered product.

There's a new line of plank coming out soon that isn't layered like that. It runs a little cheaper to. The factory just came online and they hope to start having it at the distributors first quarter next year.

Let me find some linkage and I'll post it to verify.

Sidingpro, I wasn't aware of that, thats good news though. Cause I've even noticed that if you pick a 12' peice of siding up at one end and allow it to sag a lot the layers will acctually separate in some spots causeing it to weakin. If you have that link that would be great.
