Replacing Windows In Masonry
What would be the best way to replace windows in a masonry (stucco) house. The existing windows are metal and appear to be mortared in. I will be replacing them with vinyl double-hung windows. I know I could frame out the rough opening with PT and wrap in aluminum. Is there another or better way? I would like to keep the RO as large as possible and avoid the aluminum wrapped PT for aesthetics (inside and out). Thanks.

i like to use vinyl pocket reeplacement windows. but i believe that the do offer clad units as well. this way you dont have to disrupt the mortar, and you get a nice finished look.

as you know replacement windows d/h are generally 3.25 thick. I would take the glass out rap the stell like a u with a flap coming back in on the sheetrock then install your window up to the metal frame you will loose the depth of the window but not the width . hang blinds on the outside of wall.

Re: Replacing Windows In Masonry
Be careful wrapping the PT with aluminum, the new ingrediants of the PT lumber LOVE to eat any metal other than stainless...ask about the garages I built I had to go back and replace cap work on last year until we were notified about ill effects of new chemicals. Locally buidling dept. is looking the other way when we do our 2x6 jambs on OH garage doors and allowing the use of standard lumber. OR you can wrap 2 layers of building paper over the PT and then cap it. Any exposed PT will start to form "scabs" and "bubbles" eventually in the aluminum.
Situations like that I'll order the window a touch smaller and set it inside the existing frame and do what I have to do inside and out to make it look right. |

Re: Replacing Windows In Masonry
Bet grumpy has down replacement windows in a brick home. There are so many brick bungalows in chicago and brick apartments. The reason why according to a documentary i was watching on wttw one night is because of all the brick in chicago and alot of immigrants who came to chicago were masons.

Re: Replacing Windows In Masonry
Reminds me of a job I did years ago. My boss had meinstall a replacement in the R.O. and tapcon and caulk to mortar. the window was recessed when viewing from interior and exterior...I don't see why you couldn't use a double hung, cut off nailing flange and install stops to hold it in. But I'm not quite picturing what your interior is. Are you making window flush with interior wall, and what is wall made of. Not to many stuccos in these parts...

Re: Replacing Windows In Masonry
Working with a guy who has tendered a brickie for 15 years after he sold his business and retired. (don't ask me why he tenders, I think it is to get out of the house.)
He is always suggesting that new homes with brick put brick molding around the windows. This allows for easier window replacement and better window reveal to lay the brick to. I can't see the downside to this suggestion. I have done numerous brick replacement where the window had to come out and we come in and just lay up around the window. A total waste of time IMHO.
