Hey Tom just wanted you to know I wasn't trying to be a jerk. I sell quite a few MI windows and always appreciate feedback good or bad. I fI push a product I want my guys to know the pros and cons. I am with you on the replacement, always like when the contractors call for Integrity by Marvin instead of vinyl replacements!

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

I use Jeld-Wen windows. Average cost, and lifetime warranty. I became a service provider for the company so in the event that any of my homeowners have a problem with the product JW pays me to go out an fix it. Can't beat that. If you have buying power in your market they will give you exclusive rights to your area. I buy about 500K a year in vinyl replacements with them so they have not opened another dealer in my area. All referals come straight to me. This is for vinyl and wood.

How to the American Jewel Windows hold-up in 5-10 years time frame? Please share your experience?

Secondly - I also checked their site; they have been in the biz since the 1940's but have not won any awards, your thoughts? Does it matter? On the other had Gorell windows another PA manufacture is also a vinyl manufacture and claims to have won many awards?

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

do you guys have a norandex around there? they are pretty good, and reasonably priced, people around here in central illinois use a variety of replacements, I like certainteed, and pella, but when doing new construction I use anderson only.

Awards are like this quote from tommy boy about guarantees.

"I can shiit in a box and mark it guaranteed, or you can buy a quality product from me!"

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

So they are good in other words (American Jewel windows)? Do they hold good in 8-10 years?

Any other windows do you recommend in NJ area?

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

American Jewel have been known to warp..i would google an Okna dealer in NJ and call them. you cannot buy direct from Okna, only through a dealer.its a damn good window. Okna is probably one of the best windows available.

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

Okna is a much higher quality window than american jewel. AGM Siding and Windows is an Okna dealer in NJ .I beleive norther n NJ if i'm not mistaken. they sell all Okna and Starmark lines; exellent quality windows.
american jewel is also in norther nj but i have found them to be builders grade;not bad but not a higher end window.

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

I read through many of the post and everyone seems very knowledgeable, so instead of starting a new post, I wanted to see if anyone had and recommendations on painted vinyl windows. My company has a job out here in Tennessee and we're wondering if vinyl windows are a good alternative to wood.

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

im originally from new jersey. I have been installing simonton for about 5 years now, never a complaint, whether double or single hung. I have installed silverline windows as well, I found that the 8500 and 9500 windows are the nicest frames, but are comparible with simonton for cost. If you look at Silverlines 4000 series, they arent bad, just the design is about 20 years old. I usually get a good price from norandex/reynolds for simonton. Good thing about silverline is they are right in Jersey. Another local is Patriot, not sure how godo they are, but a solid frame, plenty of glass options, and a modern balance is what I would look for. And I too would stay away from anything screwed together. Havent installed that since I worked for thermal-gard in the mid 90s.

There are ways of painting vinyl, but it becomes a maintenance issue. I would decide what you are looking for to compliment your color scheme, and most window companies offer white, either beige(sand) or almond(yellowtoned), and some still offer brown. Preferably I go with white when possible. If you look into wood, JeldWen offers 8 different exterior colors as a prime window and I have installed tons of Sequel wood replacement windows in several colors.

We had discussed Simonton as well as MGM Industries. For the job, we are going to need to use an earth-tone. Sequel Wood sounds like a good option, but we need bulk orders for because we are working on several locations. Jeld-Wen seems like a custom fit instead of quantity producer. So, price is an option in determining where we go. Have you ordered any replacement windows in bulk, in the past? Is there a ball park we should look for out for? We will start with the quantity then go after the quality vs. cost to be honestly frank.

Looking to meet stringent deadlines? Simonton offers a tan, nothing like earthtone. Sequel has a 4 week turn around, but can handle bulk orders. The last mass quantity job I had was an apartment complex in Pa. Used Silverline and they were really consistent. It was the first exit of the NE extension. Cant think of the town off the top of my head. We were ordering by the building which was about 100shs and about 14 5'pd at a time.

If you go to a local small time dealer, I have experienced less than marginal quality control, poor welding, and even worse customer service when the product was defective. In South Jersey we have Thermal Check, Universal Window, and the infamous Window Factory, all of which I wouldn't install with my name on it.

For your needs, with color choices, you may want to talk to a sequel rep, and weigh other options that can fit within the scope as well as the time constraints. I prefer Simonton and Sequel, but they are by no means, the be-all-end-all window companies. Winchester used to make a nice window too. I was doing state farm insurance work in nebraska over last winter and that was the window I was putting in for them. It was decent, good invoice pricing, fast turn around, no complaints from a professional standpoint. I do not know if they are a regional window or a national company.

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

I'm looking into the same thing for a weatherization project and Serious Windows came out with a vinyl replacement window that is twice as energy efficient as other brands and is still cost competitive. Here is a link:

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

got a ? for ya are these the windows you would install in your own house?
it kills me everytime someone ask for a good quality window for cheap.
and then you guys come on here and give them windows you can buy for cheap and think they are good.
go back and do your homework look at the most successful companies out there. the one common thread between them is that they sell and install high quality windows at a fair mrkt price. not cheap costing windows at a cheap install price. find a great window manufacturer present the windows to your customers show them why its a better window for them and show them the difference between them then get a good price for it have a satisfied customer and lots of repeat biz.
luber yard grade get ya lumber yard prices and if your bidding against the next guy it only comes down to who can do it cheaper some say who can buy the job for theyre customers. hey joe blow gave us a price of $25.00 per window can you beat that price then ya go and try to find the cheapest thing ya can to hopefully get the job. and all the customer does is say let me think about it all the while going back to joe blow with your price to see if he can do better.
thats not a good way to be stay away from cheap!
and did i read where some knuckle head asked why should they install vinyl over painting the wood one's ?

Re: Replacement Vinyl Windows

In NJ there are tons of "buy 3 get one free" or "$99 windows installed"

I have a sample sequel window, simonton window, and silverline that I have acquired. I always explain simple differences and educate my clients on why you shouldnt deal with companies like window wizards, or the window factory. The use of virgin vinyl, wider thermal barriers, thicker glass, modern balances. I explain everything and why, although my window installed is a bit more expensive, it is a complete job as well. I cap and caulk every installation and that is part of my price. most cheap installs charge extra to cap. I worked for Home Depot as an installer for 3 years and they charged $75 per window additional to the customer for capping and $90 additional if it were a metal rip.

I have the policy that I am just upfront and honest with a potential client. I try to sell them on the good points of a simonton window, and if they arent happy with it, I dont sell a builders grade anything. Every job is my reputation on the line, and when abuilders grade window fails in 3 years, they wnt bad mouth the crappy window, but the guy who sold it to them. thats not for me.

And then theres some people who believe that a window is only a window and cheaper is better.
