Question For Window Guys

I've taken off a lot of hardware in my days for painting windows, but have never come across this before. It is a little lever underneath the lock mechanism for a window. It has a small knob that fits in a slot on the top of the window sash, and it appears to be spring action. From what I can tell, it does nothing. Has anybody seen these before, and what is their function?

Locking the window in an open position or tilting for cleaning.

Call a painter.

I'm telling you, these paper hangers...

Re: Question For Window Guys

Most wood windows have surface mounted tilt latches, which when pulled in allow the user to tilt the sash in to the home. The lock you have has a lever which pulls in hidden tilt latches in the top rail of the window sash.

Re: Question For Window Guys

Looks like Marvin Ultimate double hung hardware to me. Whatever you do do NOT, I repeat do NOT remove the plastic piece in the sash. It is connected to a string which connects to the two latches that clip into the jambliner. I've had the "good" fortune of having to repair some of those when the painter pulled them out. I think I used a crochet hook. LOL. That piece in the sash also has to be able to turn or else....No Tilty window.

Another little tidbit about the Marvin Ultimate double hung(if that's what it is) is where the trim guys nail their casings. It is very easy to want to nail the casing close the window side of the casing, however nailing there will cause your trim nails to blow through the balance spring. OOOH does that make a horrible noise when opererating the window and will probably require a new balance.
