Quality Siding Choice?
I am having the siding replaced on my home and was going to use a wolverine brand product that we used on my detached garage a few years ago. It had the fiberglass rods in the nailing flange.
Find out today that wolverine no longer produces that type product. I chose to go with the Millennium line that wolverine makes, it has the fabric web that is used as the nailing flange. It looks like the superior product and comes with a lifetime (really my life or that of my wife's) blow off warranty. It is supposed to lay flatter and won't pop and creak in the sun if the nails are too tight. I am just wondering if any of you have an opinion on this product, we will finalize the order in the AM. Thanks |

Re: Quality Siding Choice?
If this is a house you plan on living in for a while, what else are you doing while replacing the siding? Any additional insulation being added? Have you looked at foam backed (insulated) siding? Certainteed and Owens Corning both make a superior product to the one you are looking at.
It is more expensive of course...around $140 a sq. compared to probably $75...but when you figure that you don't have to spend labor hours ($$$) on nailing foam up prior to the cheaper siding, it works out to close to the same cost anyway. AND the foam backed siding will lay flatter on the surface, won't rattle and has a doubled over nailing hem. You mentioned something about siding being nailed too tight. ANY siding that is nailed tight will give you problems...it has to have room to move with the temperature changes so don't get sucked into someone's pitch on that crap...make sure you have quality installers that won't nail it too tight. Are you having windows and doors wrapped also? |

Re: Quality Siding Choice?
I agree with the foam-backed siding. It's kind of expensive and not easy to work with (cuts have to be very precise and for goodness sake don't try to unlock it). However, it is very straight, it insulates a bit (can raise R value by 4), and it looks good.
I heard about an issue with the fabric nail hem, but I forgot what it was. Can't say pro or con about it. |
