Pocket Door - Door Handle?
We're installing a pocket door.
Using regular 30" slick hollow core door and pocket hardware system from Home Depot. What do we use for a handle? I was thinking go no handle, but when door is closed it be easier to open with some sort of handle. Any suggestions?

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle?
Any good lumber supply center will carry a selection of pocket door handles for you in all finishes and set ups, locking or non locking. All it involves is notching the door where the hardware goes. You definitly need the hardware on a pocket door or like you said it's going to be a bear to open it.
I'd also stay far away from any Home Depot brand, look at Johnson, they are the leaders in this field and it will be well worth it in what you get. |

The ones Johnson has are round and look cheap(nice hunk of white plastic there): ($20 each!) The ones I got from eBay are square...all metal: ![]() (about $15 each! from a store or online retailer.) I bought 7 pulls from a guy on eBay for $15 total....only to discover the Mrs. wanted a different color ....so I bought 7 more from the same guy...same price (he was selling lots of 7, but I only needed 4).All 14 pulls are brand new I have 7 pulls in an oiled brass finish and couple of chrome ones leftover. Prices are all over the place on these things, a little research will save you some dough.

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle?
I should be more specific, I'm referring to Johnson's pocket door hardware as in the sliders and door components, not necessarily the latches. I have no idea what brand of those we use. The ones I've used look like the square ones you got off ebay. That's why I say with the right hardware all you need is to notch the door for installation, pretty fool proof with those like you are showing.
What I was talking about was staying away from cheap pocket door hardware to construct the actual pocket door system with. Johnson has the best stuff I have seen. Very solid, well thought out and easy to install, almost fool proof with their saw off the wood part of the system at the pre measured distances. This all makes sense if you have used their stuff before. They have it all worked out on their sliders, if you are installing a 30" door you just cut the wood part where it is marked at 30". |

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle?
Mike,
I have 0 issues with their pocket door kits...I got the hang of it after the second one...by the 4th, I was a seasoned pro .They are easy enough to do IF you have done a proper rough before-hand

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle?
Looked at the Johnson stuff.
It looks a whole lot better than what I was gonna get. Thanks for the tip ya'll. The track and slider mechanisms just look like they're better made. The other stuff I was looking at was from Stanley, I would of bought it had I not come to this site. Thanks

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle? That Stanely hardware is garbage....single track, rollers on same side, etc. Spread the word on the Johnson stuff. BTW....you can actually get the Johnson track at Big Box ...imagine that?BUT....it is out-of-stock quite frequently. Along with extra pulls, I have one extra of the pocket door kit....I bought an extra - just in case ...ya know? They were so easy to install, even I didn't mess it up

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle?
On hollow core doors, to cut these in, the stile is completely severed.

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle?
When trimming out, make sure the finish nails for the baseboard and casing on the pocket door frame are not too long.

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle?
You can buy them(door kit) online at Johnson's website, Big Box of various colors, probably at lumber yards, etc ...I would not buy the round pulls as discussed earlier.

Re: Pocket Door - Door Handle?
ditto on the johnson hardware. i only use those tracks, get them from my local lumber yard. one thing i have done if the job allows the extra thickness is rip strips of 2x and screw to the johnson studs, it really helps stiffen the whole thing up. allows for longer nails/screws etc. and you cans also get electrical boxes in there. it makes the trim on the pocket edge stay straighter too, that is an area that tends to bow over time and then rub the door.
i hate pocket doors but most jobs these days, architects love putting them in. i see why they do it, but imo. they will have problems someday and taking the door off is a pain once its been trimmed |
