Picture Framing Windows

I'm installing Hardiplank on a new house with Marvin windows. The windows are installed with Tamco 6" sealant on tops, sides, and bottoms. I'm using 4" Koma to trim the windows in a picture frame, but it's hard to get the trimboard to lie flat since the Tamco is pretty thick and is sealed up against the window for waterproofing. Any suggestions other than having to shim each piece of trim?

Also, has anyone used corrugated nails to connect the mitre joints on the trimboards? Using corrugated nails has been recommended to me to help keep the corners tight, but this is a waterfront property and if I use them I need galvanized or stainless steel fasteners. I have no clue where to find them.

Thanks in advance for the assist!

I'd 'rip-strip' some narrow backers to length rather than playing with individual shims, - - if that's what you're talking about.

You could also 'rabbett' out the backs before installing, - - but I'd prefer the strips because the window trim will look better on the 'proud side' anyway.

I've never tried corrugated nails on trimboards, - - but myself, - - I'd prefer to run screws for more 'lateral' strength and 'drawn-tight' joints. You can use 'coated' deck screws, - - they'll be buried anyway.

Suggested filler for the holes would be urethane-based caulk, - - although I prefer paintable GE silicone caulk myself.

Re: Picture Framing Windows

What Tom said plus caulk/sealant the miters before you hang the trim. Load it up then wipe/clean the excess off before it dries. Make sure you do not 'dam' the cap flashing.
