I would never use anything less than a 2.5" splitless siding nail. stainless is more corrosion resistant, but double dipped in molten zinc will withstand being drawn out by changes in weather conditions better. The heads on these nails are relatively small.

I would. I feel 15G or maybe* 16G would hold trim and the like; but as far as siding is concerned, I feel the customer has his hands full with enough wood siding maintenance. Dealing with some siding pieces falling off or rotting out of their fastener's hold is something way beyond that.

*with a few extra fasteners.

I would frown on it. Stainless rinkshanks would be the best. The small heads are hardly visible, and they come in colors if you need to hide them better.
