House wrap is engineered to prevent water from entering the wall space from the exterior while allowing water VAPOR to escape to the exterior. Tyvek house wrap requires installation with the printed side toward the exterior for it to function as designed. House wrap and chemical or bio hazard suits are made from a different type of tyvek with a different permiability. You can read about it on their web site.

Screw reading.....Do it! I wanna know. REAL data.

If I posted the data...you'd have to read it. Or maybe you wanted a picture of water vapor escaping.

I stand corrected. Thought I recalled the tyvek tech say it was directional at a seminar I attended for continuing education classes for my annual credits. The only directional properties seems to be regarding the tyvek drain wrap.

In any event I only use it when I have to because I am somewhat skeptical of its value to cost ratio.

BTW the installation specs do indicate that damaged tyvek doesnt need to be removed and can be covered with a second layer.

Re: New Tyvek Over Old Tyvek?

I am a little confused as to how there could have been such a long debate on the Tyvek issue. Has not everyone here used tyvek often or simply not known why they were using it? Either answer is rather disturbing for the "Siding, window, and door" Contractor Forum.

The reason that Tyvek is now standard instead of tar paper is because it allows Water Vapor to excrete while stopping liquid form H2O from reaching the sub siding. Vapor beariers are unneccessary and even destructive to your home and health when applied to the sub siding. Yes that has finally been covered and after a trip to the DuPont website it was finalized but C'mon! Has noone ever had to answer the question of why they are applying it to a homeowners home or even your own? Does everyone here know why you install products and in what way?

I am not intending on comming off rude so please forgive me if I am. I Simply don't understand why there was such a debate on a Forum for Proffessional Tyvek installers that handle it every day.

Re: New Tyvek Over Old Tyvek?

Jer, I myself would remove the old just so I had a smoother surface for snapping lines. I have been bombarded with Certainteed warranty issues this summer. They're having alot of shrinkage issues. Good luck with the shoulder (I too am a surgery statistic). Mine hasn't healed very well.

Re: New Tyvek Over Old Tyvek?

on a similar note, just around the corner from my latest job there is a 2nd storey addition being put up, after it was framed they tyvek'd the place . taped it , no issue, standard procedure. however after the tyvek was complete they then go on to put 1" type 2 foam on and then tape the seams.... vinyl is going on for siding but what kinda problems are these creating by putting a vapour barrior over top of the air barrier?

we put up type 2 foam on every house we do, only spots we tape are windows, doors and where roof lines tie in along with using vycor all other seams we let breath. then we tyvek. are these guys trying to copy our technique only doing it bass ackwards and wrong or are they onto something building officials are expecting now?

Re: New Tyvek Over Old Tyvek?

i agree Kirk,in fact ill go 1 further and say the foam is actually a sheathing extension

all windows and doors should be installed on furring the same thickness on the foam ,then the house wrap

its really the only way to maintain a decent drainage plane imo

I DID call HIM and left a message to let him know that I would use a competitors brand or even just go with the trusted tarpaper cause he blew me off..

You are supposed to tape all seams of 1" foam board tounge and groove or not (At least in Upstate NY) However, I have had issues with interior mold as well of several other local companies which is easily solved by not taping with the exceptions of major water run off areas. I use 1" Dow board myself and they call for taping of all seams however like I said, I have run into more issues taping than not.
