New Construction Windows With Built In J

Im rehabbing very old houses. Gut rehab. Im installing new construction windows with built in J. The thing is , Im doing Tyvek and fan foam. That doesnt leave room to slide the vinyl siding into the windows J channel.. Next house gets going next week. I think Im going to tack the windows in place. Pull them when we do tyvek and fan foam on that side of the house , then set the windows and tape flash them. Does this sound typical to all the guys who hang vinyl?

Os, Just a thought what I would do is rip some strips of plywood to put behind the window flanges to hold them out the same thickness as the fan foam. I think nailing the window to the fan foam would bo to irregular when you go to trim the insides.

We space the windows out also with srips cut from 1/4 inch ply...seals great and the window remains flat with the wall...and siding.

it never ceases to surprise me the questions a "contractor" will ask.are you for real?the norm?yes everybody mounts windows to the fan fold.
check out certainteed.com they have a window installation course available free.it'll get you started on the basics.such as suitable mounting preferances.

The siding we install is nearly always "polar wall" from Norandex, and is 1-1/4 inch.....we space our NC windows out to maintain the siding level intot he J channel.

Yes Im real. The thing I like about this forum is the advice I can give and receive. My background isnt in plastic siding or vinyl windows with built in J. So thanks for the help. Now to decide which advice to follow.

I like all insulation, foam, etc, behind the flange, with window flush, then after squaring, I install the lower flashing befoe nailing the window bottoms.

Os---I never use this low grade window but if I did I would consider a few things here. Do these units have built-in extention jambs? I do not like the idea of installing the window over the foam. It sounds like a bad idea. Water can wick through and make these jays pointless as well as creating other issues later. If you must do it, use wood lath as a backer to bring the unit flush with the fan-fold. Its cheap and its 3/8" x 1 1/2" ideal for this.

If the window has a nailing flange how the hell do you keep the window parallel to the wall??? If you nail too tight the windows gonna sink into the foam, to keep from sinking im assuming you nail loose, now you would have a loose window?? If subjected to constant opening and closing could the window potentially work loose? I only use plywood. Lats are ok but they tend to split too easily especially if you are nailing the window every other nail slot. Another option is Crane Board makes an adapter that snaps onto the windows built in J channel that turns it into a 1-1/4" Deep J Pocket for use with their insulated siding.

dont forget to ice & water shield your flanges properly after window is installed

I'm taking a display window and setting it in a piece of wall as a display. I plan on taking pics with water showing how most siding jobs guide the water behind the siding, and how the flashing I install guides the water outside.

I'll post the whole thing on the website later.

I will add this, i am using tyvek then fan foam. I will tape flash them also. My jambs are made with my casing and sill. I picture frame my window trim, including the jambs, in the garage during insulation and drywall phase.

Just my thoughts but I think the easiest way is just to put J on the windows.....problem solved....As for putting tyvek under the fanfold I would think it would be fine but I wouldnt tape off the fanfold or you might create a moisture barrier.......
