need ideas

guys,

I have a youn helper that has been with me a while and is dependable. I am trying to trian him on wrapping the casing or molding around windows and doors. I learned this by working on siding crews when I was younger. This is a good and fairly bright guy, but eighter I am not getting through to him, or he just needs a book with pictures and how to diagrams. any suggestions? Any how to books out there?

I was a dunce at first with one, I could not learn it the field sort of felt rushed. I brought one home and practiced on my own house. From time to time I would have to call friends and have them walk me through a bend. Now when I teach someone I seem to rush them the same way I was rushed.

the problem

I think that he cannot look at the profile and see what needs to be done in his head. A simple casing seems to go alright, but anything with any detail and he looses it.
I have tried to draw out how I look at the profile, measure, account for material in the bend, and then what order i need to make those bends. Seems to be way beyond this one.

I used to draw out my bends, sometimes number them too.I've spent ,many winters bending up metal stock, counter flashings, drip, gravel stop,etc..and the practice paid off.

It's harder for me to teach someone to install it right than to bend.I like to wrap everything before the siding.bend all my flashings with a nailing fin.can't stand to see metal face nailed.it's easy and cheap.all metal should look sealed before the caulk too.I've seen some windows with 1/2 gap in the corners, with caulk all over it.
I've done a few round ones.I used some metal shop speciality tools to get the metal to curve.and it was coated galv and not aluminum coil.guess it depends on what your doing it for and what they expect.

did a quick search and found this.http://www.toolsplus1.com/shrstretch.htm
looks like it but the ones I used were much older.

When I bought my Tapco brake it came with a instructional video. I watched it out of curiosity and was actually surprised at how well it described laying out and bending even the most complex pieces.

If this kid is younger he will probably understand a TV show better then you spending all day telling and showing him how to do it. I'm sure you can order the tape online or get it from your local Siding dealer.

Good Luck!

we have the tapco guys at our bbq's and stuff, very helpful. If your dealer has functions like that ask if tapco will be there great way to learn.
