Moving Large Door Units And Windows

Hey All..
Here lately I have been getting a lot of front doors with sidelights. Due to the large size of the units, I am looking for the best method to transport them on a regular basis with most ease. How do you guys typically transport units like this ....when delivery isn't an option.

Do you stand the up in the back of the P.U and use your ladder rack, or trailer them? I don't think they fit in an enclosed trailer, so I am looking at other trailers. Maybe I could build something to hold the doors upright to avoid racking and damaging them.

I know you guys will toss some good advice out -
Matt

I like it when the door company
or lumber yard is responsible 'til
it's on site!
Why isn't delivery an option?

I've actully been getting alot of calls about them latley, I guess one of the box stores ran a special on them, and a few people have bought them. They don't want to pay for Delv. for what the stores are charging. stupid I know... But they didnt mind my price, guess they save where they can. Plus, I just am curious how others in the game do things.

How about using a stand used for marble/granite slabs?

Here's a quick google'd example-

Maybe wrap the metal with carpet scraps to avoid damaging the doors and windows.

Not only that, but accepting responsibility for the door as soon as you drive away from the loading dock at the big box. No thanks, you sell it, you deliver it ot the job site. That is why we buy from professional mill suppliers, if it is damaged when it arrives at the job, it doesn't even come off the truck.

That's what I said.
They break it, it's theirs.
You break it it's yours.
For how much?
You don't even have to screw up.
What if some pin head T-bones you
at a light?

I agree ,always have it delivered . Its difficult enough to move around at the job site and isn't that your main concern. Just a thought; I have two different carts , One is just a 2x10x 4' with some small wheels [for hard surface] and another with wheel barrel tires.

I agree with the other guys, have it delivered. If the owner doesn't want to pay, add delivery to your price and have it delivered.

You could rent a uhaul for about $40 So who is responsible when something goes wrong since they bought the door?

Re: Moving Large Door Units And Windows

I just went ahead and paid for the door to be delv. to the jobsite. Cost me 45 bucks, but if something happened to that door it would be a whole lot more than that. PLUS, if you factor the time into going and picking up the door, waiting on an associate to pull the door, load and drive time, plus gas.....45 bucks is a bargin. Although it does bring up the interesting point of who is responsible if the home owner buys the door and then rejects having it dlvd.

No issue at all. If I provide materials it's my job to get them to the site. If the customer provides materials it's the customer's job. I hate owner supplied materials. They buy display models that come missing parts or damaged, they forget pieces like brickmold or casing, they get mismatched stuff.

I always made it clear, if they supply materials, once I start working anything that needs extra parts or repair I will do (not their choice anymore) and I will charge full rate for all my time screwing with it. When it's done, there is no warranty from me.

That usually, not always fixed the problem of owner supplied stuff.

Re: Moving Large Door Units And Windows

When ever I get doors with sidelights I order them as seperate units. Easy to handle that way and also I get control on the door unit. I've gotten too many door/sidelights that are just plain assembled f'ed up right in the factory by somebody making $5.00 hr.
I also try to make the time to pick up the doors and stage evrything at my shop ahead of time. It doesn't matter where you bought the doors from when you are there at the jobsite already and you get a damaged product delivered. It's too late. You banked that time for that job and now you can't do the job. If it's in my shop I can catch the problem beforehand and then schedule other work in its place so I don't lose any $$$ for the day. I have never had a supplier question a damaged product issue.
