Method For Flashing Chimney/vinyl

on chimneys where the 'step' is located, I've always bent a piece of aluminum which extends at least 1/4" beyond the accompanying J channel when siding. Also used some good silicone or polyeurethane caulk trying to get it back in the valley of each step to usher any water out from getting between the brick and wall. Does anyone have a better method?
