metal brake projects.

I am in the process of trying to make shutters out of coil stock. Have any of you ever made a cool project or item out of coil stock on a brake?

I'd think they would be awfully flimsy, no? Not knocking it, just never heard of it.

You would build this on 1/4 plywood as the base. It is the same thickness as fanfold so it planes out the same. I am going to build these in the warm shop at home. Then install j-channel around it , then siding. These are made to stay on.

Living in Michigan I have lots of free time. And with 5 brakes, trimformers, slitters, and cutters just sitting around ,i can use all that scrap white alum. off jobs and build something cool. A few siding contractors make all thier own fasica, j-channel, window trim, and water tables around the house. We see very little plastic trim on houses. Most everything is alum. coil stock.

The siding butts into the j-channel. Just like j-channel around a window. But this shutter sits next to the window, then the siding goes around the window and shutter.

Must look really really really nice, must be why the house values keep dropping in michigan

Yes, that is the reason our house values are dropping.

Gary,

I have never seen a shutter sit in plane with any siding.

Shutters should sit on top of any siding to maintain the illusion that a person could actually "use" the shutters.

Right????

Greg ,
Good question. The frame of the shutter will be about 2'' thick. J-channel will take up half of this. So 1'' will stick out. I can make this any thickness to match whatever will look good. Also the center will be divided by a slightly recessed 2'' piece. so I will have two rectangle areas. I was going to fill this in with a piece of stock creased corner to corner. Vanmark used to have a picture of what I am trying to make. I don't know if they still have it on thier web site.

Here is another angle of what I am trying to do. I want the shutters to have the look of being built in. When they sit on top of the siding, you see the gap behind the grooves of the siding. The idea is to build them, so from the side this gap is eliminated.

The whole idea seems a little strange to me. If it were me I'd at least be trying to eliminate the J-channel by building that into the shutters. But if it were me I probably wouldn't be trying any of this!

At the end of the day will it be worth it? Or even look as good as the real deal? Or even close?

I hate it when people think that having 5 breaks means something.

All i can say is post a pic on the shutter idea. I'll take a pair of vinyl ones for $40 any day over this approach and i've got extra brakes and scrap coil myself.

Haven't tried bending up shutters. Have to see it I guess. Here is some full custom bent window wrap. Covers stop and leaves storm ledge. Wraps brickmould, deep v for rigidity, and bent in J channel. Take it easy on me guys.
