Insulating A Garage Door
I want to send some AC into my 2 car garage workshop. I have a steel overhead door that is just bare steel with bracing for the wind. I am thinking of putting sheets of foam insulation on the door but am wondering if this might cause any damage to the door. Trapping heat and warping the door.
If there are any Garage door experts here I would appreciate some input. Also if this is feasible should I use foil backed and what side to put the foil. |

Re: Insulating A Garage Door
I did that very same thing to mine, cut the 1" foil-faced foam to fit loosely in the openings, then sealed them in with the canned foam sealant. Did that 6 years ago, the only thing I had to do was re-adjust the springs to even out the weight, but other than that no problems.
It also made the door much quieter when it opens and closes, plus cut down on the ambient noise coming in (and probably going out too.)

Re: Insulating A Garage Door
Thanks Mike,
Thanks for the quick come back. I'm in Florida and the heat here is a bit much. I like the added bennies you mentioned. |

Re: Insulating A Garage Door
Garage door insulation kits are sold in lots of places here, must be a regional thing. I did a search and came across this one if you're looking to order one- http://www.texasgarages.com/insulation.htm

Re: Insulating A Garage Door
the insulated version of the economy garage door uses thinner than the R1.3 foil foamboard-probably about 1/4" thick. The expandable foam idea is a great one-line the edges with the expandable foam to lock the foam and door together.
