Installing New Basement Windows...(help!)
I'm looking for some advice on installing new windows in an existing basement wall. This would entail cutting a hole in a framed wall above a stepdown foundation wall in a walkout basement: How do I go about supporting the structure above long enough to frame the window with a header and install the window? I have a general idea of shoring up the structure above with a beam across the joists but, what about joists parallel to the foundation? I'm also concerned about point load on a new basement floor. Any takers?
Thanx |

Your rim joist, box joist, will probably serve as enough temporary support as long as it is one piece above your opening and there is no concentrated loads in that area. Actually i have doubled up the rim and called it a header when the conditions were right.<P>
Point load on the slab? I think where you would have windows, there should be a foundation under the slab. unless I'm getting the wrong picture here, your foundation should handle any point load from a window opening. Expansive soils would change the equation but from what I gather on this forum expansive soil is a southwestern thing. |

"Double-up the rim joist"... That makes sense! I might try that. As far as the point load, I was referring to the point load on the slab where I had envisioned supporting (jacking) the house with a beam across the joists to temporarily lighten the load. I just didn't like that idea. But, doubling-up the rim joist makes sense to me. I'll consider that. Thanx Rob

Re: Installing New Basement Windows...(help!)
On my old framing crew we built T post from 2x4's to put steel beams on untill we got the steel posts they sat right on the flatwork next to the pad sometime till the roof was capped. the flatwork should hold posts just fine (not forever of course)
