Installing Hardie Lap Siding on Block

Howdy people, newbie here.

I'm building my own home and would like to install hardie lap siding directly to the block. I want to avoid furring it out.

I have been told that Max makes a high pressure gun that will direct nail the siding to CMU. I was told by another source that I would have a hard time controlling the depth and if the nail is driven too deep I'll have to drive another nail, and not deep enough a hammer probably won't be able to drive it flush.

Does anybody have any experience with this kind of install? Any other recommendation for installing this siding directly to the block?

Thanks in advance.

In Orlando,

Dave

1x3 Furring strips are the best option.

ET&F Fastening Systems collates pins to fit the Max HN120 high pressure tool. ET&F is the only code approved pin fastening system for the "direct to block" application. It is approved by James Hardie and listed in their NER-405 report and their Best Practices manual. ET&F pins also have the Florida Product approval. The part number is ASM-144-0125M.

The regulator is adjusted to prevent overdrive and allows for consistant pin placement.

The system has been used for over 10 years and first used ET&F's Aerico Model 90 tool. The number for ET&F Fastening Systems is 800-248-2376. The number for James Hardie is 1-800-348-1811.

Thanks David,

I did all the research and have finally decided to go with furring strips. Despite what a number of sales people have told me about the gun for direct fastening, I am a little skeptical of consistent pin depth, which is critical for that product.

The furring strips will give me an air gap too which will increase R value.

Thanks for the info though.

Sorry I didn't post back sooner but as you can see I'm not on here all that much.
