Hardiplank On Steel Studs

I'm replacing siding on a steel stud house. It's sheathed with gypsum board and has no house wrap. On cold days you can see the outline of the studs on the siding. I was going to wrap it but was wondering if anyone has used the foil/ bubble /foil thin reflective insulation such as Tekfoil or Prodex under Hardiplank? I would rather use it than putting up 4X8 sheets of foam as it comes in 8' x 125 ' rolls. Anyone have any input? Thanks

You might want to consider stucco wrap, it's made for contact with cementious products.

How do you plan on fastening the siding?

I'm screwing it on with stainless self drilling screws. Both of the companies that I mentioned have products that can be used under siding., I was just hoping that I could find someone who has used something like that before. Thanks

I can tell you right now that anything foil faced is not what you want to have in contact w/cement siding.

Thats why I'm posting to get input. What is the reason why you don't want foil next to cement siding.

Re: Hardiplank On Steel Studs

The chemical reaction between the concrete and foil could very likely eat through the foil in a short time.

Only galv. steel and S/S should come in direct contact with any concrete. No matter if its siding or a slab.

1" of foam will help resolve the stud counting issue on cold mornings.

ET&F make a nail gun designed for fastening Hardi to Steel Studs.

Re: Hardiplank On Steel Studs

Thanks for your inputs, the reason I'm screwing it on is that the original siding was shot on with some kind of fluted nail and it wasn't holding very well. When removing the siding, most of the sections where coming loose and could be pulled off very easily. This happens to be my own house, I woulnd'nt do this job for hire for someone else.

Re: Hardiplank On Steel Studs

I have never heard of a gun to fasten to steel studs but bet I will be checking into it I had to screw hardi plank to a house that was formed to the roofline with foam cement forms then a pump truck filled with 8 inches of concrete. These forms had steel strips in them similar to steel studs. We used Stainless steel self tapping screws to fasten they did hold well but believe me it was no fun. You can use fan fold insulation under fiber cement it is reasonable cost and has a plastic coating that will not react with the fiber cement
