As tom said (I seem to be making a habit of this tom) weaving is different than mitering. The thickness IMO shouldn't make a difference when weaving; although with a mitre I would say would make a much easier joint. Just make sure you have a very new Hardie blade!

I've always mitered and loaded up the joint with 3M 5200 when the second panel was joined. Cleanup is with mineral spirits and is pretty nasty but no complaints with the install.

I have two benchmarks. My backyard shop was done with 5200 and other unconventional construction, my home gable ends utiliize BM best caulk. Both were done after hurricaines Francis and Jeanne in '04 so there is not a lot of time on either project.

I have a lot more confidence in the 5200 due to its use in the marine industry, it's also rated for 100% submersion.
