Hanging Vinyl Siding On Steel Studs.

I've got a job that requires vinyl being installed on metal studs.

Anyone recommend a screw?

Re: Hanging Vinyl Siding On Steel Studs.

I saw somewhere once where there was a screw specially designed for this.

Common sense tells me I need something self tapping with a pan head. Thanks for your response though.

There has got to be a screw made just for this application.

what about strapping the walls first with 1x? then nailing the siding

Re: Hanging Vinyl Siding On Steel Studs.

The problem with that is dealing with all the different windows and bump outs. Also it's a commercial project so I don't really get to start getting into all that stuff.

I didn't realize when I bid this it was steel studs. Not that big of deal because it's only like 10 sq. on the back of a store. Just got get something to fasten it with before I can start.

I'm set up to hang fiber cement on steel studs all day. So i know what i'm dealing with just never had to hang vinyl on steel before.

I'm just needing a screw plain and simple.

You need to make sure your panheads are at least as large as the roofing nail head or larger, 3/8" I think, or add washers.

Hey, what about those fancy rare earth magnets? Just lock your panel and toss one near each stud, yeah that's the ticket. :>)

Good Luck

Vinyl siding should not be attached to studs without a layer of solid sheeting between the siding and the stud.

What is your point. I'm not new to this. I obviously know you have to have some sort of substrate between the stud and the siding. This application happens to have densglass.

Keeping that in mind there is still a steel stud on the other side of substrate that it needs to fasten end too.

You do know that you have to fasten to the studs right? From your reply I take either you think I'm a rookie to this game or you attach to substrate?

Chris the problem with those screws is they don't have the proper coating. The heads will rust off.

I just figured someone here might have hung vinyl on a steel framed building. I guess I'm a pioneer.

I ended up finding what I needed online. Thanks anyway.

Care to share what you found? Or will you take your ball and go home?

It looks like your asking what screw to use to attach vinyl siding to a steel stud. If your asking what screw to use to attach sheeting to the steel stud or maybe what screw to use to attach the vinyl siding to the stud over a solid substrate I didnt get that from reading your post. Sorry.

We use 1.5 x #6 stainless tec screw with large pan head in a square drive to attach both sheeting and siding to steel studs.

Re: Hanging Vinyl Siding On Steel Studs.

How can you possibly make money installing screws for vinyl siding? Time killer is an understatment. The designer must not have designed the building for vinyl and now the builder wants to cut a cost by using vinyl. There has to be money there for strapping. On another note I would hunt down some ring shank nails with a large head and try those. Let us know what you come up with.......

"Chris the problem with those screws is they don't have the proper coating. The heads will rust off."

Sorry, but I don't see that happening with those screws. They're galvanized and hold up well when exposed to weather, unless the building is near a coastal area.
