Getting Hosed??

Hey guys I work for a big siding company ABC seamless. sure you've heard of them. anyways, i'm wondering whats a fair price to pay an employee to wrap windows and doors. they pay us $18 an opening whether its a window, door, hell even an 7x16 overhead door. they give us $15 whole dollars to take a storm off and put it back on. Just seems like if i do 10 a day it isnt much. also, do any of you caulk the bottoms of your sides that sit on the sill or do u get them so accurate you dont have to. they moan and complain if we dont get them perfect. not that i blame them, but for that kind of perfection, $18 isnt much.

Re: Getting Hosed??

Are you an employee or sub? You mention the word employee but per piece is generally for subs.

Re: Getting Hosed??

I'm actually an employee, get taxes taken out and everything. and yes we're on piecework, supply our own hand tools, drills, sawzalls and accessories. been doing siding, soffit, fascia and similar things for 8 years or so. also, we get $65 sq to install, 20 to tear off and 10 to insulate. oh and over 25 miles you get and extra $5 sq for siding. but only siding. dont ever cover my gas

Re: Getting Hosed??

That really sounds like you are sub.. They may deduct taxes, but since you are using your own tools, do you also get to deduct their costs from your overall income like a regular sub would?

Re: Getting Hosed??

no i dont. we dont get 1099s we get regular W2's like a regular employee does. we dont set our own price. it is what it is on every job. they dont ever give us another time for 2 story, gables, anything. dont sound like a very good deal does it. dont get me wrong either, we're not a couple scrubs who do ok work. we do great work to meet high standards. andwe've been doing it a long time.

Take this at face value, a man offered you a job and you accepted the job, everything is fair unless you were kidnapped and forced to work. The man who runs the business has to maintain his business and enjoy the profits from his business.

Your might want to take some classes or learn how to run a business and start your own gig (only 5%-10% make it). OR see if someone else can pay you more per year than your current gig. Does ABC keep you busy year round.....will the new company?

Re: Getting Hosed??

i totally agree with that, i'm not trying to bitch, its a job. I was just trying to compare to get some sort of idea how much some things run as it pertains to other subs, employees.

Re: Getting Hosed??

$30-$75, depending on how many bends, height, amount of windows and a bunch of other factors. I provide the coil, nails and the caulk the subs provide everything else (overhead, gas,benefits.........)

Re: Getting Hosed??

I bet they are using pretty much the same model as Fargo. We were getting 18% of contract price that came to about

90 sq siding
15 sq fp38
15 per window wrap
25 per garage door wrap
4 per ft soffit facia
15 sq tear off

Also we did quite a few log jobs that sold for a lot more money and the more the job sold for the 18% was higher.

Also we had extra charges for 2 story, storm windows, herringbone, color changes, mileage from shop, and a bunch of other stuff that added a little but we got the standard 18% on that so if it was a $20 charge it did not really add up to much but a little anyways.

Also was provided with a cell phone, company paid insurance and gas on my vehicle (which was new and company lettered).

From what I have heard from other abc franchises this is real high especially in comparison with what fargo pays. I really don't think I could have lived on any less though. And one thing to think of is this franchise provided no vacation or sick time, no insurance, but did have a simple retirement plan that matched up to 3%.

But if you are getting health and dental, some vacation time and anything like that maybe what you are getting might not be bad.

Cutting it right or cutting it wrong takes the same amount of time . . .

For 18 bucks I wouldn't give a ****. I have never done vinyl however if you don't caulk seams around window around here you have problems. Water problems.

Re: Getting Hosed??

I undercut the wood trim with a sawzall and run my sill wrap under the window and brickmould so that the jambs don't need to be caulked where they meet the sill.

Same here, - - and that's the best way.

An alternate method is to have the sill sections of the wrap that would fall under the casings be snipped into their corners and then have them fold up and under the casing-wrap.

Windows should be wrapped in one of these two methods, - - no caulking necessary at all.

Caulk will fail.
