Re: Cutting Hardi Radius On Wall

I would use a cut off tool or grinder with those thin cut off blades.

Depending on the radius, I've had good success cutting curves with cement siding shears. A radius window should be a shallow enough curve that the shears would work fine.

Re: Cutting Hardi Radius On Wall

I think he is cutting this siding already mounted on the wall, so using the shears may be a little tough unless he can pull it away from the wall so the shears can move underneath.

Otherwise I like my shears for Hardie siding.

I'm curious about the flashing detail
for the curved window under the
existing siding.
If we hadn't burned out on it,
we could have gone through an
entire sub-division replacing rotten
sheathing and saturated insulation
with new construction faux-palladians.
I don't see a good way to flash
these with out removing siding.
I'm willing to learn though.

What say you, sider? Your thread... want to provide some details?

I'd want to pull the siding away from the wall no matter what I was cutting it with, to keep from cutting into the flashing/tar paper beneath. Just jam a couple of shim blocks under the siding to push it away from the wall and cut away. Flat bar and cat's paw to remove nails if he has to completely cut through (top to bottom) a full piece of siding.

Side note, shears are SO nice for cutting Hardi w/o kicking up a ton of concrete dust!

Re: Cutting Hardi Radius On Wall

I hate the shears. They cut rough as hell especially while cutting a radius.

The pieces of plank need to be taken off and put back properly.

Since I would have them on the ground I would just use my jigsaw that cut's smooth as butter.

Imo it would be faster to take of the pieces and redo everything properly than trying to quick fix this one.

Like someone stated this is such important flashing detail that get's over looked that it's not a good spot to cut corner's.

Re: Cutting Hardi Radius On Wall

My guy's can to but there slow. The snips work for the first 50-100 sq. Then you have to flip the blades or by new ones because there dull.

Nothing beats a 12" chop saw with a vacuum hooked up to it. When I need 5 pieces the same length they measure one and cut 5 at once. Smooth as a factory cut.

I'm getting ready to do 3 hotels that are each 300 plus squares of plank. There's no way I could do a job that size with my guy's using snips. If your hanging a couple square a day sure the snips are fine.

Carbide grit jig saw blades work very well for cutting hardiplank and leave a pretty decent edge.

I get them at Lowes.
