Custom sky light bubble

First, this is for my house, so ease of installation, cost, and reliability will be the main considerations.

We have a bubble polycarbonate skylite above the master bed. It's double thickness. But it has become cracked over the years and for some reason the wife don't like water dripping on her face in the middle of the night

Here are some pix , outside and inside:

Name: skylite1.jpg
Views: 45
Size: 112.1 KB

Name: skylite2.jpg
Views: 45
Size: 73.3 KB

Size is approx 46" x 21"

If we were to replace with another bubble, we would need to have one custom formed. Anyone know a source either in the Boston/Providence area OR an online vendor?

If we choose to go with a flat sheet we got the option of insulated glass OR doubled polycarbonate (Lexan).

I am not sure if there are advantages of a bubble over flat. Opinions?

If flat:

I am assuming polycarbonate would be better than glass. (less chance of breakage). Right or wrong ? Opinions welcomed. I think I've ruled out plexiglass because it scratches so easily.

Whether I went with glass or polycarbonate, I assume to be thermopaned, it would need to be custom made. Again, any source in the Boston/Providence area? (I've checked the Yellow Pages and can't seem to find the proper listing)

OR could I just make a double Lexan pane with silicone caulk ?? (with no gas, vacuum, etc)

If making a polycarbonate lite myself is a good option, then again I need a source near me or on the net for sheet polycarbonate. (can I assume 3/32 is an appropriate thickness?)

Sorry, I know this was lengthy, but all these question have paralyzed me for over a year now.

your opinions and additional info would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't seen you for awhile.
Homemade, bad medicine.
Check out your glass suppliers.
They can make a real custom
thermal pane replacement.
My experience with custom "bubble"
replacements is beau coup $.

What are the dimensions of the skylight?

That skylight looks like what they put on mobile homes. Do a Google search for mobile home skylights and you will find a bunch of them. Most are made with GE Lexan resin.

But that skylight looks like it may be a standard 2' x 4' size, and I would just get a Velux glass skylight.

Easy and cheap

go to HD/Lowes and pick up a framed skylite 24 X 48 (approximate dimensions) and pad out the top of the curb to fit the new skylite.

Did this a month ago for my neighbor.

That's pretty much what I've found,
unless It happens to e some perfect
stock size.
Apparently they just made those things
in random sizes to drive us nuts.

Sorry to hear about your Mom.
I've long had to plan on at least
two days a month for Mom's
doctors appointments, tests...
so I know how that goes.

Don't be a stranger.

My suggestion would be to ditch the bubble.

Replace with custom insulated glass. The aluminum frame can be removed, the bubble discarded and replaced with insulated glass. The glass should be laminated safety glass on the inside and tempered glass on the exterior.

The manufacturer of the insulated glass should have a minimum 5 year seal failure warranty....better ten years.
