Commercial Windows Question

Looking for a source for commercial grade energy efficient windows to install for a county govt. project in a concrete block building, brick veneer. 53 windows combo picture top, awning below.
Up to this point we have barely gotten our feet wet in residential window replacement installs but I have an extensive history in construction. We can handle it.
This is a prevailing wage job for county govt. Any tips on this from you guys that have done some county work.
Be a real nice job for us!!! Winter quite slow around here. Be able to keep the heat on at home this year.
Have to have the bid in by 10:am Friday the 9th! They just put out for bid!
Thanks for help,
Dave

Re: Commercial Windows Question

Pella, Marvin & Eagle are pretty popular around here in town halls, librarys, police and fire and such especially on remods. Also check with a regional manufacturer if your looking at vinyl. Make sure once you have all the specs you let the window company give you a formal written cost for the project don't rely on their price books or other info, and make sure they guarantee the prices through the actual construction date.

Re: Commercial Windows Question

I found a couple of glass companies here in Central Mo that can make energy efficient aluminum windows to fit the openings. Expect them to be up the charts on $$$$$.
I'm looking around for some gray or silver exterior vinyl (painted with warranty) that may work as they will be considerably more affordable. Some are telling me that it's too large of a hole for vinyl without some support between windows. Then some say their's spec out so must be stronger frames. Wind is the issue, there will be no bearing weight or anything.
Hope you all are finding some cold weather work!
Dave

Be careful with the warranty, most of them are shorter on commercial jobs.

The painted coatings on vinyl have not been around that long, I'm not sure about it yet. Some companies offer a colored vinyl that bonds to the vinyl window. The company that I use has it in a brown almost black color.

How big are the windows?

So 2 mulled awnings with a small picture window mulled to a single awning with a picture on top mulled to another 2 awnings with a picture. Are these divided or is the opening actually 156" wide. If so see how long of a unit the window company will send, some get worried about shipping/handling big units.

Do you have specs on what they require for DP ratings?

Talked to one company that said we'd have to field mull them because they can't ship so large. All they have is white and beige vinyl anyway tho and I won't put those in a brick/alum situation. I was thinking of quoting them three single hungs mulled together but have the sash set down about 1/3 of the way from the bottom to make them look similar to what is in there.
Have no specs at all. It's a weird bird out here in the Missouri hills.
What do you know about a vinyl that might come closse to that alum. look?
Take care,
Dave

Check your local codes then on DP, the vinyl H channels (mull strips) might not meet the code. All of the larger mulled units that I order have hidden wooden mulls to meet the DP codes.

There are a few companies that offered crappy painted vinyl windows. Don't quote me but I think certainteed is one of them that I was picking on. You might want to post this question on the vinylwindowforum, some of the dealers there might have a source for good colored windows.

Re: Commercial Windows Question

DP is the pressure rating of the window. You need to make sure that the vinyl windows that you bid can withstand the DP rating you are spec'd for. Most residential vinyl windows are not meant to be used in a commercial applications lets say above a 4th story. Amerimax is a window manufacturer in the West that does painted product. Not sure of the DP ratings or availability in your area, but they have a website.
