cheap vinyl windows

We did a job recently on an eight year old home. I noticed that the vinyl windows are already very brittle. They have like a powdery coating on them as if the vinyl was cheap or someone washed it with something that they should not have. It looks like in a few years they are going to have to be replaced. Do you guys see this very much and know what the causes might be? I do see this around quite a bit especially on the "sunny" side. This may be a very good reason to sell top quality windows it would be very expensive to change these things out!
Thanks,
Dave

Sounds like the vinyl in the windows may not be protected with UV inhibitors.

i see this all the time but people still insist on taking the cheap route. i think of silverline/american craftsman, metal industries to name a few.. investment grade windows are the way to go. cheaper is ALWAYS more expensive.
cheaper vinyl is either recycled/regrind or just a very cheap grade with cheap additives.
