Cedar shingles

cedar shingles, do you use nails or staples? Although staples are cheeper I think they make the shingles curl up faster. any thoughts

Staples. Using nials make the shingle cracks therefore the hold isn't as permanent.

16 gauge 7/16 crown staples blind, and coil nails for face nails

But how do you cover/hide the nails you face nail?

For shingles that don't sit tight I dab a lil' bit of PL then 18 gauge the face to suck it tight until the PL cures.

I meant cover/hide as in painting or caulking to cover/hide the nail heads.

I only use coil nails when blind nailing. Who wants to see big nail heads shining all over the place? Same reason finishers don't use nails with heads. They introduced brad nails and adhesive some time ago.

I grew up in a coastal area where cedar shakes were always left to weather. When we had to face nail. we used stainless coil nails. They don't stay shiny for long, and they blend right in.

Now, when we do shakes, they are usually stained. the painters stain right over the nail heads. Never had an issue.

Glue will cause the shakes to crack, and good luck using a finish nail when the shakes start to curl and move around.
