Board And Batten Siding

never really use this stuff;nobody ever asks for it. that said,i have a customer getting cedar boards(foam backed) and asked about some half rounds on the gable. i am thinking of using some board and batten on the gable instead,i think it will really add some design to the home. opinions on using verticle siding?

Re: Board And Batten Siding

Vertical siding in the gable usally installs with a visible j channel that will look terrible. The j channel will fill with dirt and every time it rains there will be dirt streaks running down the wall.

Vertical siding on the lower portion of a house to the gable line looks good as the j channel can be used as the starter for horizontal siding in the gable. This method will hide the j channel.

Don't take the liberty to redesign the customer's house without their approval first. IMO B&B only looks nice on a house which is intended to look rustic. It doesn't fit on every house.

Re: Board And Batten Siding

I suggest using a frieze board and continuing it through the gable. Makes siding transitions look so much better and adds detail.

We've done a couple high-end victorians with vertical siding and they turned out great.....Batten layout is critical! You've got to pay attention to windows, corners etc...
