Basement Window Question
Hello, I have a question that I hope someone can shed some advise on. I Currently have a deck that I am ripping down and replacing because it is rotted, old and falling apart. The new deck will basically stay in the footprint of the original. Under the deck is a basement window that the dryer is vented out of. The window is wooden and old and also needs replacing. My question is should I continue venting the dryer out the window under the deck, or will the moisture affect the new deck. I will be using pressure treated lumber but i still want to do it the correct way. if i am to re-route the dryer vent now is the time to do it. If it is O.k. to still vent out that window I would rather do it that way. The rough opening is 19" X 36" is that a common or standard size? If anyone can shed some light it would be greatly appreciated. I am posting this question as well in another section. Thanks,

Re: Basement Window Question
Couple ?s for you Greg.
How is the vent run through the existing window? I'm guessing it is an old 2 or 3 pane window? One pane is prolly replaced with a piece of galvanized metal, and the vent is in that? Next, I'm wondering how you plan on running the vent through a new window, which will most likely be a insulated double pane? You can get ANY size window, but customs are more $$$. You can get the closest stock size without being bigger than the RO, then fill in the RO to fit the new window.

Re: Basement Window Question
Dryer vent that vents out of a window?
Why not make a penetration through the wall, 4" hole and use that for the vent. I may be reading this wrong, but I just wanted to type penetration at least once on this site. OK four times. |

Re: Basement Window Question
I dont see any problem venting under the deck as long as the vent projects the exhaust downward. As far as the window you have a couple options depending on the size of the window. If you have a tall enough opening you could use a shorter window and frame below the window within the original opening for the exhaust to exit through the newly created insulated wall cavity. Another way to go would be to use the same size window and have the manufacturer cut a whole in the window for the pipe to fit through. Harvey offers it for a $15 upcharge

Re: Basement Window Question
Yes, the window is an old wooden one, three sections, two are glass, the third is the vent, looks like it is plywood insert with the vent going through. I would use the harvey window if no one thinks it will be a future problem venting under deck Thanks

Re: Basement Window Question
No problem venting under the deck as long as you don't close it in tight. Decks need air flow under them, especially if you're blowing hot, moist air under it.
I still am wondering how you're going to cut a circle in a new window? Or isn't the new window IG?

Re: Basement Window Question
Two possible ways, Harvey makes a basement hopper that they will put a dryer vent built in already for a $15 upgrade or I have spoken to people that mentioned companies that will built basement window frames with glass blocks, dryer vents, and air flow vents all inside the frame and you just install them. I figured if this was acceptable (venting under deck) I would continue doing it and avoid putting another whole in the house.
