Am I Crazy!! Can I Make This Bend?

Hey guys heres one for ya. I was wrapping some doors and windows today and I needed to bend a peice like I drew in the picture. I guess I have never ran into a bend so small before or something, but I couldn't make the 1/2" bend circled in blue! Once you bend one side you can't put the peice into the brake throat far enough. The smallest I can do is probly a light 3/4". Is their any way to do this? I had a Tapco windy so I always avoided real small bends cause it wouldn't do nearly as much as the Vanmark Mark1 that I got about a little less than a year ago. Any tips guys?

Thanks, Dave

Re: Am I Crazy!! Can I Make This Bend?

Hey DK,
I'll try and explain it.

Try making the first bend only about 30degrees,then flip the piece over and make the second bend about the same.Keep flipping the piece over till you get your 90's.Once you get the first crease going in the coil, you should be able to get your 1/2" bend started as the coil will slip closer to the mouth of the brake without being stopped by the outer lip of the handle.
Sometimes it can get done in only a couple flips.Practice on smaller scraps till you get it down.

I do it all the time, without thinking about it,so trying to explain it may be a little vague.Try it and let me know how you made out.

My Pro III is a little worn out, so I can usually get 5/8. I was taught by my dad that my brake would only do 3/4, so I am going to try Oldfarts way tomorrow. Thank for the info.I am only 29, but been braking for 12 years, and it is really the only hands on aspect of this trade that i still enjoy.

Re: Am I Crazy!! Can I Make This Bend?

ill try old frts way tomorrow as well, I run inti this problem when capping entry door jambs in one piece. what I had been doing with my windy was making the first bend then propping the handle up 30-45 degrees with a piece of wood and cheating the material in to that half inch mark when clamping for the second bend. which doesn't always work if the material slides during the bending because it doesn't always clamp as well with the handle propped up for obvious reasons..

I wrap all my doors with that 1/2'' bend similiar to the above description but just 3 bends. It will scuff the coil a little when the break edge rubs trying to get by that 1/2''offset but is easily cleaned off with wd-40 or paint thinner.

This is for a door jamb? Are you putting a storm door on? If not we just pad out the half inch and wrap over.

Thanks oldfrt, I will deffinetly give that a try tommorow. I gave never heard of that. It sounds like it will work great, I will let you know how it works.
Vinylguy, I like your idea too it will give it the rustic look
Patrick, this particular bend I did today was for a garage door, but if I do a regular door I do the same.

Thanks, Dave

We always rip that trim strip off, run our aluminum, and then install a vinyl trim board with a rubber gasket

Do you mean the outside garage door weatherstripping is what you rip off? I usually would rip it off, but the customer didn't want to have any matenance, like painting the vinyl trim. I looked around and couldn't find the trim in the color to match the aluminum. It was alcoa evergreen.

Yea thats a tough call. If the door is white, then sometimes we will run our aluminum over the vinyl strip. If its gotta be colored, I have no problem painting the vinyl trim in our heated shop. I guarantee, if properly painted, it will outlast the finish on the coil. FYI Alcoa value soffit is spray painted, and it holds up just fine

I know,I just hate painting though Ya you are right about the soffit I have used it too it holds up just fine.

Oldfrt, WOW!! what a good tip I finished up a little early today, so when I got home I played on the brake for an hour or so. I was even able to make a 1/4" bend like I have pictured. I can't get over how easy that trick works!

Thanks, Dave

It worked for me too. My dad instantly said we will do that for entry doors. We have been doing two pieces and caulking seam. Thanks a lot for tip.

Good,
I'm glad I was able to explain it so it is understood easily.
Seeing you use the hems on the edge of your material shows that you like doing a good quality job.

PS
Did you ever get to try the 1/2" J channel bend?

Thanks oldfrt, Its funny you mention the jchannel. Yup I did today acctually I spent a while just trying to bend all kinds of stuff that I could think of just to see if the brake would do it. I got all kinds of good ideas now!

Thanks, Dave
