Aluminum Pop Outs

I recently moved to Michigan. The market for replacement windows and doors is much different from arizona where I used to install windows and doors. A lot of the windows here have aluminum pop outs around the exterior. Does anyone have experience with replacement in the northern region? do you try to save the existing pop out or do you replace the aluminum? Do you break it yourself? Whats the most effective way to do this?

I'm assuming your talking about aluminuim storm windows. The older looking grey colored ones are usually good enough to throw away. They are usually caulked in and with a little patience saving them can be done. Otherwise tear them out and replace with a newer stlye, which now comes in many different colors. The main reason people buy these is because they don't want to pay full amount for a new window or replacement window, but the storm and screen combo is a must have...Now your question is do you break it yourself??? Are you thinking about breaking glass and getting just the glass replaced and leaving the storm intact? Sounds like spend as little as possible on that job...

Re: Aluminum Pop Outs

maybe i am reading this differently but i think the poster is talking about the aluminum casing around the window. if that is so, you always replace the aluminum casing and re seal it with a good caulk, as far as "breaking" it yourself i believe he means bending the metal on the break, he may not have one, ifthats the caes maybe you could find someone to bend it for you.
