? About A Negative Pressure Door Blower Test Equip.

Im thinking about offering a new service to my residential customers. I do waterproofing and restoration work. But customers are always wanting all the air leaks sealed up. Well my question is, Would i really need an expensive negitive pressure digital door blower or could i just use a strong fan and tent without readings on it and walk around the house with a smoke stick? Do you think a customer is interested in seeing a before and after number when they would have no idea what it even means. I mean i could shut of there house and if they had a attic fan i could just do the same thing but some houses dont have them. Do you think this would be a good service. i could charge something like a $150 fee for the test and then get the work from it too. Just looking for some imput. Thanks.

It looks like they have lease to own options on complete blower door systems for less than $75 a month. Seems like it would be worth it to do it right?

If you do what you are describing you will know where the air is coming in but you'll have no idea how much is coming into the house. What if you unwittingly make a fairly tight house so tight that you create air qualitly issues?

your right... it would also look more profesional to have the right equipment rather than a fan with duct tape or something. Plus it would be real impressive to show a customer a drop from 300 somethings to 50 somethings.
Also i dont mess with flyers or mailings but it seems like you would get a response with a service like this from mailings and flyers if i kept a low price on the test in hoping of getting the repair work.

If you decide to go this route consider marketing your services to realestate/rental companies.

One local property rental company I have done work for gets every new apartment tested at the end of construction and also does energy audits of their older units and has them tested with a blower door to determine extent of window and door replacements on rehabs.

We have been selling a ton of blower doors and IR camera combos as of late.

You have to watch cheaper blower door systems. You basically have two options for quality ones. Minneapolis Blower Door Systems and Retrotec. We carry the Retrotec system and customers love it.

For a true energy star audit you have to have an IR inspection and a blower door system capable of producing 50 pascals. To obtain 50 pascals of negative pressure you need approx a 8000 cfm fan.

We currently offer a package of a Fluke TiR1 thermal imager, a Q4E Retrotec blower door and throw in free Snell training on both. The training is 5 days of hands on, IR theory, IR scanning, etc as well as IR with blower door testing. Training is $1685 through Snell. On a 3 year lease it generally runs around $400-$500 a month on average credit, with a $1 buy out at the end of the lease.

It seems everyone and their brother is flocking to energy audits, building science and thermal building envelope diagnostics. If you guys check out energystar.gov and your state and local government resources you will find there are tons of grants and tax rebates for home owners to upgrade their homes energy efficiency.

I plan on hooking up with a well know energy audit company, whos owner is pretty well regarded in the industry, if I get the additional opportunities to add the insulated siding and replacement window ines to my wares next year.
