It's a great DIY project if you have some basic common sense, but if you've NEVER done it, or have only been a "cut guy" for a freind, seriously consider getting a freind that does this to give you a hand...at least to get it started so he can give you pointers. I've met alot of homies that sided their own place and are happy with it, but once they see how it's "supposed to be done, they realize how screwed up their sheeot actually looks. I'm really biased though because in reality anybody can hang a straight panel with no notches/provisions, but IMO the way J is installed and how obstacles are gone around is what makes or breaks a project. Miter everything for professional look, be sure ALL your J channel interlocks with corresposnding pieces so when it gets cold and it shrinks it does not look any different than when it's 110* outside...hacks just butt J together and it looks like dog ********************t, very DIY imo and pre made corners would be better than that method and they look crappey as well
When you start running courses, ALWAYS double check around the corner to be sure panels on both sides of the building are lineing up...it can get away from ya if you let it. When doing soffit if on a hip roof, ALWAYS start in a dead corner, or a corner that is not in everyday plain view because once you get back around (if your mitering) often the panels will not line up exactly and it looks like crap, so your better off hiding it on a back side corner of the house. Or you can do a hack job and just do striaght cuts so you dont have to worry about it.

but then it'll look like an average homie did it.
I like to do all my cap work prior to installing any J channel and will bend a lip back out onto the sheeting so it's essentially got a "nailing fin" and once all the cap work is installed I got back around and tyvek tape over the "nailing fin" on my cap work as an added flashing measure..really important on 2nd stories since I canty remember how many hacks I've had to go out and fix a water infiltration issue due to bad flashing on 2nd story.
Over the years I've heard "siding is easy" and "anybody can side" LOL, well on a dog house yes, but if you want you stuff to look nice and last then not just "anybody can side"...and there are even plenty of siding crews that IMO have no right installing the stuff either

but they're the low bid.
