No biggie. A lot of those buildings had an incinerator in the basement. The fireman would spend his free time burning crap in the incinerator. About the time people quit using coal so much, and the building no longer needed a fireman, the incinerators were abandoned.

Re: Whoaaaaaa What Is THIS????

I once walked into an unlocked "electrical" room at a local middle school that had a similar setup. The lockset only allowed locking if you had a key. It was a bit after hours at the school, the office was closed. So I called the poco emergency number. The lady there was acting pissed off at me cause she was sure I was the person who left it unlocked. I do not have a key for the poco vaults.

I worked in the old Lackawanna Railroad Building in Jersey City (which is huge) where they had 4 rooms like this.

13.8 kv primary from PSE&G.

Don't believe everything you hear. These rooms are of course locked but building management has the keys to these rooms. I specifically asked to see these rooms so I could get these fancy pictures for discussion. Fafa Fo Hi!

Able1, I don't blame you for backing off & being scared, never being subjected to any high voltage equiptment like that. This definetly should be behind locked doors & clearly marked with big Danger signs ! This should be addressed.
We had many transformer yards in the plant I retired from & they were all locked, with only electricians having keys, and they were all marked with big signs. I used to have to go in to Infrared the taps, etc.

here is Just an example of high voltage staring you in the face- I had to P.M. a large 13,800 volts outside vacuum breaker that fed a transformer. I had to open some doors on it & when you opened them, there were 13,800 kv buss bars just 12" away !! Yikes, no slipping here!!!! I ending up talking the "boss" out of this one until we had a shutdown ! To make it even scarier there was always condensation on the steel walls in the winter time-which we addressed later..............

Please don't misunderstand the fact that I may be Low Voltage Contractor. I have also worked on everything from 480vac 3 phase to 400vdc 200hp DC drives on down the 5vdc chip level electronics. It is just the first time I have seen this equipment in a room that I just happened to be in at the same time.

Something is in the works to get some locking going on. If it was actually up to me I would have lag bolted the door shut.

Have a good day.
